It was a weekend scheduled to be packed full of baseball for NEKL teams but only four games were actually played out of the 10 scheduled over the weekend.

On Saturday, Doniphan County was slated to play host to Leavenworth in a non-league doubleheader, but there was no baseball in Wathena after Leavenworth did not show for the contests giving Doniphan County a pair of forfeit wins.

Sunday Mother Nature put a damper on the baseball plans of both Hiawatha and Seneca who were scheduled for non-league showdowns with Wamego and Marysville at home and on the road, respectively. Both doubleheaders were washed out due to rain.

Frankfort and Atchison did hit the diamond on Sunday in a makeup doubleheader from earlier this season and each team picked up a win as Atchison won game one 9-0, while Frankfort took hom game two 5-4. With the split Frankfort moved to 9-13 on the season and Atchison moved to 10-14 on the year.

Doniphan County and Sabetha were the other two teams that were able to get action in on Sunday as Doniphan County played host in Wathena for a doubleheader. At the end of the day Doniphan County picked up the sweep with 12-9 and 7-3 wins and won the NEKL regular season title in the process.

In game one, Doniphan County took the early lead scoring a single run in the first and second innings leading 2-0, until Sabetha posted a four-run top of the third. Doniphan County answered with a six-run bottom of the third. Sabetha continued their scoring in the top of the fourth with two more runs, but Doniphan County kept up their scoring, also with four-runs in the bottom of the inning. Sabetha tried to get back into the game but only mustered three more runs as Doniphan County held for the 12-9 win.

Caleb Winkel finished with two-hits for Doniphan County while Jeffery Watts had four RBI's and Nathan Gaarder had two RBI's as Doniphan County had 12 hits. Sabetha finished the game with 10 hits, including a three-hit game from Taylor Bauman who also had two RBI's, while Dustin Boeckman had a two-hit game.

In game two, Doniphan County struck first again plating two-runs in the bottom of the first and then added another in the third, two more in the fourth and two in the bottom of the sixth. While, Sabetha tallied all three of their runs in the top of the sixth inning.

Chris and Caleb Winkel each finished with two-hits for Doniphan County, while Nathan Gaarder earned the win on the mound pitching five and two-thirds innings recording 12 strikeouts and combining with Phoenix Keller to only give up four-hits to Sabetha. Sabetha was led by Boeckman who finished with two of the teams four hits in the contest.

With the sweep Doniphan County moved to 19-7 on the season and 12-2 in League play claiming the NEKL regular season title to go along with winning the NEKL tournament title earlier this year. Sabetha with the losses fell to 20-14 overall and 10-5 in League action.

The regular season will wrap up this week with just a few matchups for NEKL teams before they turn their attention to Zone tournament action starting Monday, July 21st.
