On Thursday three NEKL teams took to the diamond for action as Doniphan County traveled to Seneca and Sabetha was on the road in a non-league matchup against Wymore (Neb.). At the end of the night all three teams had picked up a win, as Doniphan County and Seneca split their league doubleheader with Doniphan County winning game one 5-4 and Seneca winning game 5-4, while Sabetha earned a non-league win over Wymore with the 5-3 victory.

Doniphan County and Seneca Split League Doubleheader

Two of the top teams in the NEKL squared off on Thursday night with Doniphan County and Seneca both earning wins by the same score 5-4 and both get in their winning run in the final inning of the game they won.

In game number one Doniphan County took the early lead scoring a run off a leadoff walk in the second as Phoenix Keller came around to score in the inning off a throwing error by Seneca. Doniphan County stretched their lead with three more runs in the top of the fourth using three walks and two singles, as Cooper Leach had an RBI single and Cody Israel had a two RBI single. Seneca pushed back into the game scoring three runs in fifth two walks, two hits and a Doniphan County error, to make it a 4-3 game. In the bottom of the sixth inning the leadoff man reached the bases via an error for Seneca and behind another error in the inning by Doniphan County tied the game. In the top of the seventh Doniphan County regained the lead as Alex Schmille got on the base to lead the inning off after he was hit by a pitch and Caleb Winkel followed with an RBI double to that produced the winning run as Doniphan County claimed the 5-4 victory.

Winkel paced the Doniphan County offense going 3-4 with the RBI double that produced the game winning run, earning him McDonald's "Player of the Game" honors. Israel added a multi-hit game going 2-3 with two RBI's, while Keller scored two runs while drawing a pair of walks and being hit by a pitch and picking up the save on the mound pitching the seventh inning.. Jeffery Watts pitched six innings for Doniphan County giving up four runs (three earned), on four hits, four walks and one hit batter, while striking out five.

Seneca in the loss was led by Cody Rottinghaus who finished 2-3 with a run scored and reached on an error.

Game two was another tight contest with both teams getting the offense going early each scoring three runs in the first inning. Doniphan County opened the game with three singles and a walk in the first inning scoring three runs as Tucker Morris and Keller each had RBI singles in the inning, but Seneca answered in the bottom of the first with three runs. Justice McKernan lead the inning off with a triple and scored an RBI single by Cody Rottinghaus, while Dustin Rottinghaus had a double in the inning and Alex Rottinghaus two RBI's. It was tied 3-3 until the top of the fourth when Doniphan County took the 4-3 lead on an RBI single by Keller. Down to their final three outs Seneca fought back in the bottom of the fifth with five guys reaching safely scoring two runs to win the game on a walk-off RBI single by Andrew Oller, giving Seneca the 5-4 win.

Dustin Rottinghaus led the offense for Seneca going 2-2 with a run scored, RBI, walk and double, while pitching the first three innings of the game. Cody Rottinghaus finished with a 1-3 game with two runs scored, an RBI and reached on an error, while McKernan, Oller and Matt Haverkamp each had a hit.

Doniphan County in the loss was paced by Keller who was 2-2 with two RBI and a run scored, while Caleb Winkel took the loss on the mound.

With the split on the night, Doniphan County moved to 11-6 on the season and 6-2 in League action, while Seneca moved to 11-4 on the year and 11-3 in League action.

Sabetha Tops Wymore on The Road

Sabetha took on a team from Nebraska for the second time during the first week of July and this time came away with the 5-3 win taking down Wymore, to earn their sixteenth win of the season.

The Raptors took the lead early in the contest as Taylor Bauman lead the game off with a double and scored in the first, while Gaven Schumann added an RBI double in the inning also for a Sabetha 2-0 lead. Wymore answered in the bottom of the first scoring on a throwing error by Sabetha making it a 2-1 game. Two more runs were put on the board by Sabetha in the third on a botched rundown and Tyler Ulrich single, but Wymore answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the third making it a 4-2 game. The final run for Sabetha came in the fourth on a two-out bases loaded walk to Ulrich, while Wymore tallied a run in the sixth, but nothing after that.

Tyler Hackney paced the Raptors on the mound pitching to the complete game victory giving up three runs on five hits and two free passes, while striking out 11, including the side in the seventh to secure the win. While, Bauman led the offense going 3-4 with a pair of double and a run scored and Ulrich notched a pair of RBI's

The win improved Sabetha to 16-12 on the year overall.
