NEKL Legion Baseball Weekend Recap -- June 20-22nd

Six games were played over the weekend involving NEKL teams, while a pair of doubleheaders scheduled for Sunday were postponed due to weather, as both Frankfort at Atchison and Seneca at Doniphan County doubleheaders were both postponed.

Friday June 20th: 

Seneca Sweeps Atchison for a Pair of NEKL Wins

Seneca played host to Atchison on Friday night and picked up a pair of wins in two different games, winning game one just by one run 6-5 and claiming game two in more convincing fashion winning 12-3.

With the wins Seneca takes over the lead in the League standings as they are 8-2 in League and 8-3 overall this season. Atchison with the losses fell to 5-6 overall on the season and 2-5 in League action.

Saturday June 21st: 

Doniphan County Wins Showdown with Auburn in Nebraksa/Kansas Border Battle at Falls City

It wasn't an easy win as Doniphan County battled until the end but held the lead throughout the game and ultimately grabbed the 7-4 win over Auburn in the Border Battle matchup.

Doniphan County started the game off with a four-run first inning and added to that with another run in the third to lead 5-0, before Auburn got on the board as Auburn scored a run in the bottom of the third and two more in the fourth. Two more runs came across home plate for Doniphan County over the fifth and sixth innings, scoring a run in each frame to lead 7-3. Auburn  tried a late comeback in the seventh, as they loaded the bases with nobody out but only manage to score one-run, as Nathan Gaarder came in relief of Jeff Watts to finish the game and got a double play and a groundout to end the game for the Doniphan County 7-4 win.

Watts started the game for Doniphan County going six innings giving up four runs, while striking out nine and earning the win, as Gaarder earned the save pitching the seventh. Offensively, Cody Israel, Colton Masters and Chris Winkel each had two hits in the contest, while Masters and Reid Greaser each notched three RBI's.

Doniphan County moved to 9-2 on the season with the non-league win over Auburn.

Sabetha Fell to Falls City in the Nebraska/Kansas Border Battle at Falls City

Despite early offense Sabetha took the loss on Saturday in the Border Battle matchup versus the host Falls City, falling 8-4 in the competition.

Sabetha took the early 4-0 lead scoring all four in the first inning behind a three RBI double by Brandon Poe and an RBI single by Adam Herl, who both finished the game with two hits. Falls City responded quickly in the competition scoring four runs of their own in the bottom of the second to tie the contest and then took the lead with a pair of runs in the third and added a single run each in the fourth and sixth innings.

Derek Bippes highlighted the night for Falls City earning the win on the mound pitching a complete game allowing four runs on five hits and six walks, while striking out 13.

Sabetha fell to 10-11 on the season with the non-league loss to Falls City.

Sunday June 22nd: 

Hiawatha Splits Road Non-League Doubleheader with Wamego

On a day that rained out a pair of league doubleheaders, Hiawatha took to the diamond in a non-league competition at Wamego and split the doubleheader, picking up their third win of the season with a 7-5 win in game one, while falling in game two 5-4.

Wamego took the early lead in game one with two-runs in the first inning, but Hiawatha answered with what was the biggest inning of the game as the scored four-runs in the top of the second on four hits and two walks. Dakota Bayles highlighted the four-run second for Hiawatha with a two RBI double. Wamego trimmed the Hiawatha lead in the bottom of the second with a run making it 4-3 after two innings. Hiawatha then added some insurance with two runs in the top of the third and another run in the fourth to lead 7-3 after four innings. Wamego tried the comeback in the sixth scoring two runs but couldn't get any more as Hiawatha held on for the 7-5 win.

Five guys finished with multi-hit games for Hiawatha as Bayles was 2-4 with two doubles and three RBI's to lead the way. Brendan Steele finished 2-4 with a triple and run scored, while Parker Hasenkamp, Ryker Smith, and Dalton Lehmkuhl each had two hits. Shawn Green earned the win on the mound going five and one-third innings giving up five runs on the four hits, five walks and a hit batter, while striking out three, while Hasenkamp finished the game on the mound pitching the final inning and two-thirds.

In game two, Hiawatha took the early lead scoring three-runs in the first off three hits and a walk, as Steele got Hiawatha on the board with an RBI single scoring Baxter DeFore after a leadoff walk in the inning. Green added a two RBI double later in the first inning also for Hiawatha. Wamego took the lead from Hiawatha in the bottom of the second after tallying four-runs on three walks, a hit batter and two singles in the inning, to lead 4-3. Hiawatha down to their final three outs in the top of the fifth managed to tie the game as Hasenkamp scored on an error making it 4-4, but in the bottom of the fifth Wamego loaded the bases and the winning run was walked in for the 5-4 Wamego win.

Green and Bayles were the only Hiawatha players to have a multi-hit game in the loss as Green went 2-3 with a double and two RBI, while Bayles was 2-3 with a run scored. Dakota Bayles and Dalton Lehmkuhl each pitched in the loss for Hiawatha.

With the split in the non-league doubleheader for Hiawatha they moved to 3-16 on the season.
