Doniphan County Sweeps Hiawatha in NEKL Doubleheader

Doniphan County picked up the sweep at Noble Park against Hiawatha on Wednesday night in two drastically different contests, winning game one 8-7 in comeback fashion and claiming game two in four innings 17-0. 

Both teams started game one with early offense plating two-runs each in the first inning making it a 2-2 game after just one inning. Hiawatha took the lead in the bottom of the third with a walk, pair of hits and Doniphan County error as they scored three-runs to take the 5-2 lead; the inning was highlighted by a Ryker Smith RBI single. Doniphan County got two runs back in the top of the fifth behind RBI doubles by Nathan Gaarder and Chris Winkel making it a 5-4 game and then tied the contest in the top of the sixth with another run. Hiawatha quickly took the lead back in the bottom of the sixth with a run of their and moved three outs away from their first League win of the season. In the top of the seventh Doniphan County capitalized on three walks and a Hiawatha error to ultimately score three runs and hold an 8-6 lead. Taylor Jacobsen who started the game for Hiawatha on the mound was taken off the mound after allowing a base runner, and Shawn Green came in and struggled in relief, leading Hiawatha to go back to Jacobsen to get out of the inning. Jacobsen leadoff the bottom of the seventh looking to help Hiawatha offensively and blasted a solo homerun to bring the lead down to one, but Hiawatha would only score the one run in the seventh and Doniphan County grabbed the 8-7 win.

Gaarder lead the Doniphan County offense going 3-5 with a double, three RBI's and a run scored, while Colton Masters continued to have a hot bat going 2-4 with two RBI, two runs scored and a walk. Alex Schmille started the game pitching five and a third innings giving up six runs (four earned) on four hits, eight walks and recording three strikeouts, while Phoenix Keller finished the game pitching the final inning and two-thirds giving up just one run on one hit.

Hiawatha in the loss was led by Jacobsen who pitched all seven innings giving up six runs on eight hits, seven walks, a hit batter and three strikeouts, as Shawn Green pitched in the seventh inning giving up a pair of runs and three walks. Offensively, Jacobsen was 2-4 with a double, three RBI's and a run scored, while Parker Hasenkamp was 1-4 with two runs scored.

In game two Doniphan County took the early lead with a run in the first inning and then opened up the game in the second and third inning scoring six and seven runs, respectively to cruise to the 17-0 four inning win. Doniphan County out-hit Hiawatha in the game 10-2 and took advantage of 11 walks, three hit batters and four Hiawatha errors.

Caleb Winkel was the man of the game picking up the pitching victory going all four innings, allowing only two hits and a walk, while striking out three and offensively going 3-3 with four RBI's, two runs scored and a walk. Schmille and Keller each added multi-hit games as Schmille finished the contest 2-2 with four RBI's four runs scored and a walk and Keller was 2-3 with three RBI's, a run scored and walk.

Hiawatha was led by Parker Hasenkamp in the loss who was 2-2 with a double, while Marshall Swearingen struggled on the mound in the game going three and third innings giving up 15 runs (11 earned) on eight hits, eight walks and three hit batters and striking out two.

With the wins Doniphan County moves to 8-2 on the season and 5-1 in League play, winning their last four games, while Hiawatha after picking up their first two wins of the season in the Marysville Classic have lost their last five and fell to 2-15 on the year and 0-10 in League action.
