2014 Northeast Kansas League Legion Baseball Tournament -- final bracket

It proved to be a Northeast Kansas League legion baseball tournament final to remember as it was a marathon of a contest between Atchison and Doniphan County who decided the League tourney title a week after the tournament started after having to move the game due to weather. The game ultimately needed extra innings to decide the winner and Doniphan County on their home diamond picked up the 10-9 win in 11 innings.

Doniphan County struck first in the competition as the first five batters for Doniphan County in the game reached safely in the bottom of the first and lead to two-runs early. Another run was added in the third as Nathan Gaarder came around to score in the inning giving Doniphan County the 3-0 lead after three innings. The fourth inning is when the bats awoke for Atchison as the used four straight hits to start the inning, including a RBI double by Brian Scott to tie the game at 3-3. Doniphan County quickly resumed control of the game in the bottom of the fourth scoring four-runs in the frame giving them the 7-3 lead; the inning was highlighted by a RBI double by Phoenix Keller.

Atchison didn't waste any time getting on the scoreboard again as Doniphan County changed pitchers in the fifth and Atchison got to Gaarder in the fifth inning scoring four-runs after batting through the order in the inning, as Gaarder came in relief of Jeffery Watts. Those four runs by Atchison tied the game up at 7-7 apiece and both teams bats went slightly quiet the next few innings as Gaarder found his groove for Doniphan County and Chase Behler who was in for Atchison in relief of Tanner Huntington was stingy on the mound, too.

Tied at the end of the seventh the contest went to extra and in the bottom of the eighth inning Doniphan County loaded the bases, by a diving catch by Atchison's, Cody Calhoon in center field ended the Doniphan County threat and pushed the game into the ninth inning. After a scoreless ninth, Atchison took their first lead in the top of the tenth, as Scott led the inning off with his third double of the night and came around to score and Atchison added another to lead 9-7, going into the bottom of the tenth. Doniphan County trailing for the first time in the game used one hit, three walks and a hit batter to plate two runs and tie the game for the third time on the night and then left the bases loaded, continuing the game into the eleventh.

In the top of the eleventh, Gaarder still on the mound for Doniphan County struck out the side and after a one-out walk by Behler in the bottom of the eleventh, Johnny Kane came in as Atchison's third pitcher on the night. Kane recorded the second out of the inning and then Colton Masters came to the plate with two-outs and put one in the gap for an RBI single to win the game in walk-off fashion, 10-9 for Doniphan County.

Masters paced the Doniphan County offense going 3-5 with two runs scored, two RBI's, two walks and the walk-off RBI single earning him McDonald's "Player of the Game" honors on KNZA. Keller added a multi-hit game going 2-3 with a double, run scored, three RBI's and he was hit by a pitch three times, while Cooper Leach had two hits, also. Jeff Watts started the game going four innings giving up three-runs on four hits, two walks and a hit batter while striking out six, while Gaarder finished the game for Doniphan County pitching seven innings, giving up six runs on 10 hits and two walks, while striking out 10, earning the win in relief.

For Atchison, Tanner Huntington started the game but lasted only three and two-thirds giving up seven runs on five hits, three walks and three hit batters, while striking out three. Behler pitched six and two-thirds of solid relief for Atchison surrendering only two-runs on five hits, five walks and two hit batter, while striking out six. Offensively, Scott paced Atchison in the loss going 4-4 with three doubles, a walk, three runs scored and four RBI's, while Calhoon finished the night 3-5 with a run scored and walk.

With the win Doniphan moves to 6-2 on the season and 3-1 in League play and claimed the NEKL tournament title for the first time since 2008. While, Atchison with the loss fell to 5-4 on the season and 2-3 in League play.
