Doniphan County Legion Baseball Tournament Recap

The 2014 Doniphan County tournament wrapped up over the weekend with Silver Lake claiming the Senior legion tournament title and Atchison winning the Junior legion crown.

In Senior legion action Silver Lake captured the 2-0 win over Doniphan County in the opening round on Thursday night, while Atchison grabbed the 10-1 win over Falls City in the other opening round game. That sent up a Falls City versus Doniphan County third place game and Atchison versus Silver Lake Championship on Saturday. Doniphan County worked past Falls City 9-4 to claim third place, while Silver Lake earned the 7-4 win over Atchison.

In Junior Legion action, Doniphan County beat Lansing 4-3 and Atchison won 11-1 over Falls City in the opening round games. On Saturday, Lansing took third place in the Junior legion tournament beating Falls City 7-0, while Atchison won the Junior legion Champioship over Doniphan County 3-2, using two runs in the sixth to earn the win.

Silver Lake Tops Doniphan County in Doniphan County Tournament Opening Round

Doniphan County opened up their Legion baseball tournament at home on Thursday night taking on a tough Silver Lake team in the opening round and fell 2-0 in the competition. Both teams feature multiple athletes from high school teams at made the State tournament as Silver Lake HS took third in 3A at State and Troy placed fourth in 2-1A at State.

Tyler Brown shut the door on Doniphan County pitching the final inning and a third to earn the save for Silver Lake, while Nathan Gaarder was on the mound for Doniphan County taking the loss but did strikeout six in the contest. Doniphan Counties, bats were quiet in the contest as Colton Masters managed their only hit of the game. With the loss Doniphan County falls to 4-2 on the season and moved to the third place game in the tournament.

Doniphan County junior legion team picked up a win in their tournament game winning 4-3 over Lansing and will play for the tournament Championship at 5:00pm on Saturday in Wathena.

Atchison Uses Big Late Inning to Top Falls City in Doniphan County Tournament Opening Round

Down early, Atchison's offense busted out late in the contest to lead them to a 10-1 win over Falls City. Falls City held the 1-0 lead going into the fifth inning when things changed fully in Atchison's favor with six hits, two walks and three Falls City errors leading to 10 Atchison runs. Atchison plated nine of their ten runs in the inning before a single out was recorded by Falls City in the frame, going on to grab the 10-1 win.

Offensively, Ricky Kearney and Brian Scott paced Atchison on the night as Kearney was 2-3 with a run scored, while Brian Scott was 2-2 with a walk, run scored and two RBI's. Tanner Huntington was dialed in on the mound for Atchison earning the win on the mound going five innings, giving up four hits, two walks and a hit batter, while striking out seven.

With the win Atchison improved to 5-2 on the season and advance to the Championship game on Saturday to play Silver Lake in the Doniphan County tournament.

Doniphan County Takes Third in Home Tournament with Win Over Falls City

Doniphan County after falling in a tough contest to Silver Lake Doniphan County bounced back to take third in their home tournament topping Falls City 9-4.

Falls City had the early lead 2-0 after the top of the first, but Doniphan answered with a run in the bottom of the first. Doniphan County then tied the game in the bottom of the third at 2-2, but Falls City scored a run in the fourth and fifth to regain the lead and lead 4-2 after four and half. The game was then tied yet again as Doniphan County plated two-runs in the bottom of the fifth and then in the bottom of the sixth Doniphan County took their first lead plating five-runs and went on to grab the 9-4 win.

Phoenix Keller led the charge on the mound pitching six and one-third innings giving up two runs and striking out eight, while Nathan Gaarder finished the game on the mound. Gaarder offensively had two hits and an RBI, while Colton Masters had two hits, including a three-run homer and Chris Winkel added a two-hit night. With the win Doniphan County improved to 5-2 on the season.

Falls City in the loss was led by Chase Thompson who had three hits and two RBI's.

Silver Lake Tops Atchison 7-4 in the Doniphan County Tournament Championship

Silver Lake captured the 2014 Doniphan County tournament Championship topping Atchison 7-4 in the Championship game to earn the title.

The lead was established early for Silver Lake as they lead 2-0 after the first innings and it was a 5-1 after two innings. Atchison got on the board again in the fourth inning behind a two RBI triple by Brian Scott in the inning but Silver Lake made it a 7-4 margin after four frames with two-runs in the bottom of the fourth, going on to win by that margin. Wyatt Moore earned the win on the mound for Silver Lake, while Tyler Brown finished the game off late picking up the save and shutting the door for the Silver Lake win.

Cody Calhoon took the loss for Atchison on the mound giving up seven runs on eight hits and two walks in three-plus innings with three strikeouts, while Cody Behler did pitch three scoreless innings of relief giving up just three hits. Offensively, Scott was 2-3 with a triple, three RBI's and a run scored, while Dillon Kramer went 2-3 and Jake Schmidt was 1-1 with two walks and two runs scored.

With the loss Atchison fell to 5-3 on the season taking second place in the Doniphan County tournament after falling 7-4 in the Championship.
