Sabetha and Doniphan County Split League Double-Header at Somerset Park

Sabetha and Doniphan County dueled each other on the diamond each earning a win on the night, as Sabetha captured game one with a 7-6 win and Doniphan County took game two 11-1.

The night started off with Sabetha getting the offense rolling early as the first six Sabetha batters sent to the plate against Doniphan County starter, Alex Schmille registered hits in the bottom of the first and behind six hits Sabetha scored five runs to lead 5-0 after one frame. A Blake Popkess two RBI double and a RBI double by Gaven Schumann highlighted the inning. Doniphan drew to within two runs in the top of the third after plating three runs on three hits and a Sabetha error, but Sabetha responded with a two-run bottom of the third to lead 7-3 after three innings. Using a RBI single by Jeff Watts Doniphan County scored one in the fifth and added two more in the sixth to draw within one-run, but left the bases loaded in the sixth and hit into a double play to end the game, giving Sabetha the 7-6 win.

Dustin Boeckman led the offense for Sabetha going 3-3 with a triple, double, two RBI and two runs scored earning McDonald's "Player of the Game" honors on KNZA. While, Keegan Schumann was 2-2 with a pair of walks and a run scored and Taylor Bauman had two hits. Bauman also earned the save pitching the final two innings of action giving up a run on two hits and a walk, while Gaven Schumann was the winning pitcher, pitching the first five innings giving up five runs on six hits and four walks with six strikeouts.

Doniphan County in the loss had multi-hit games from Caleb Winkel, Colton Masters and Phoenix Keller. Winkel went 2-4 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI, while Master and Keller each had two hits. Alex Schmille took the loss on the mound going six innings giving up seven runs on 11 hits and four walks with five strikeouts.

In the nightcap, Sabetha took the early lead plating a run in the bottom of the second as Popkess led the inning off with a single and came around to score. After that it was Doniphan County producing all the offense as they took the lead behind a seven-run third inning on five hits, a walk and Sabetha error, highlighted that inning by a two RBI double by Keller. Doniphan County added two-runs in the fourth and fifth to secure the 11-1 win.

Jeff Watts paced Doniphan County on the mound going all five innings and giving up just one-run on three hits and two walks, while striking out 10. Masters and Keller each had another multi-hit game going 2-3 and 2-4 respectively. Keller had a double, three RBI's and a runs scored, while Master drew a walk and scored two runs.

Sabetha managed only three hits in the second game of the double-header as Popkess, Tyler Hackney and Boeckman each posted a hit, while Sabetha used three pitchers in the game.

With the split on the night Sabetha moved to 5-8 on the season and 4-2 in League action, while Doniphan County is 4-1 on the season and 2-1 in League play. Both teams turn their attention to tournament action this weekend as Doniphan County host their Doniphan County tournament starting Thursday night and Sabetha will play in the Marysville Classic starting Friday night.

 

Atchison Sweeps Hiawatha in League Double-Header

Atchison continued their momentum from the NEKL tournament as they stretched their win streak to four with a sweep of Hiawatha on the road at Noble Park posting wins of 13-7 and 14-0. 

In game one Hiawatha held the early 3-2 lead after two innings and the game was tied at 5-5 after three innings after a three-run top of the third for Atchison and two-run bottom of the third for Hiawatha. The tide turned to Atchison's favor solely in the fourth as they plated five-runs in the inning, highlighted by a Jake Schmidt two RBI double, giving Atchison the 10-5 lead. Hiawatha got two runs back in the sixth, but a three-run top of the seventh helped Atchison secure the 13-7 win.

Atchison took advantage of 10 walks and two hit batters in the contest as Lane Fry led the offense going 2-3 with a triple, double, three runs scored and two RBI's. Schmidt finished the game 1-1 with a double, three runs scored, two RBI's and three walks.

Hiawatha in the loss had multi-hit games from Marshall Swearingen and Ryker Smith who both were 2-3, as Swearingen had a double, two runs scored and an RBI, while Smith had a run scored.

Game two was all Atchison as they took the early 1-0 lead in the first inning and went on to secure the 14-0 win behind a six-run third inning and a seven-run fourth inning, as Hiawatha used four different pitchers in the contest. Chase Behler was dialed in on the mound for Atchison earning the win pitching a one-hit shutout in four innings, while striking out six and allowing two walks. Behler added a 2-3 offense night with a double, two RBI's and two runs scored. Brian Scott and Ricky Kearny each had two RBI's with one-hit.

Hiawatha's lone hit in the contest was registered by Taylor Jacobsen in the loss, as Hiawatha fell to 0-10 on the season and 0-6 in League play. Hiawatha will hit the diamond next in Marysville Friday night in the Marysville Classic against the host Marysville.

With the swept Atchison moves to 4-2 on the season and move to 2-2 in League action and now will play in the Doniphan County Tournament this weekend, playing their first round game Friday night against Falls City.

Seneca and Frankfort Split League Double-Header

Both Seneca and Frankfort each picked up a win last night as the two teams split a double-header in Frankfort. Frankfort earned the 4-3 win over Seneca in game one, while Seneca took the nightcap 8-1.

Both teams moved to 4-3 on the season with the split on the time, while Seneca is 4-2 in League play and Frankfort is 3-2 in League action. Seneca will be in action next on Tuesday June 17th at home for a League double-header versus Hiawatha, while Frankfort wil play in the Marysville Classic this weekend.
