Falls City Legion Tops Hiawatha in Ten Innings

Hiawatha hosted Falls City on the diamond on Tuesday night in Legion baseball action and it proved to be a marathon of a game in which Falls City secured the 11-4 win in 10 innings at Noble Park.

Falls City took the early lead in the top of the first inning scoring two runs aided by three early errors by Hiawatha. Hiawatha's bats made up for the runs they gave up in the top of the first plating three runs behind a three RBI double by Marshall Swearingen, making it a 3-2 Hiawatha lead after one inning. Falls City quickly regained the lead in the top of the second plating two more runs to lead 4-3.

The scoring went stagnant after that until Hiawatha was down to their final three outs of the contest and a Brendan Steele double scored Dalton Lehmkuhl to tie the game at 4-4 and force extra innings. Neither team had great amount of opportunities on the bases in the eighth or ninth, but in the top of the tenth things opened up for Falls City and they scored seven runs on three hit batsmen, three walks and three hits and then held Hiawatha scoreless in the bottom of the tenth to secure the 11-4 win.

Falls City in the win took advantage of seven walks and four hit batters, while Chase Thompson was 2-6 with two RBI's and a runs scored and Chaz Dunn 2-3 with two runs scored, an RBI and three walks. Logan Scheitel picked up the pitching victory pitching the final two and one-third innings of action.

With the loss Hiawatha remains in search of the first win of the season as they fell to 0-8 on the year. Swearingen led the offense on the night going 2-4 with three RBI's and a walk, while Dakota Bayles and Brendan Steele each had a pair of hits, also.
