NEK Legion Baseball Recap -- June 4th

League matchups were on the docket on Wednesday night in Northeast Kansas League legion baseball action and it was Seneca and Sabetha splitting their double-header, Frankfort sweeping Hiawatha in a double-header and the Atchison at Doniphan County double-header being rescheduled for Monday June 16th.

Seneca and Sabetha Split Double-Header in Seneca

After some work to get the field ready for action after storms the previous night the field was ready to go for Sabetha and Seneca to square off on the diamond for a NEKL double-header and the teams split the matchups, as Seneca won Game one, 9-3 and Sabetha won Game two, 7-1.

In Game one, Sabetha took the early 1-0 lead off a Taylor Bauman RBI single in the first inning, but Seneca responded to tie the game in the second inning and took the lead in the third plating two runs, then stretched the lead to 4-1 after adding another run in the fourth. Sabetha drew within one at 4-3 in the top of the fifth behind three straight singles that ultimately plated two runs, but Seneca then answered with a three-run bottom of the fifth lead by a two RBI double by Andrew Oller. Seneca added two insurance runs in the sixth to secure the 9-3 win.

Oller led the offensive attack for Seneca going 2-2 with a pair of doubles, two RBI, two runs scored and was hit by a pitch before leaving the game in the sixth inning with an injured right hand while performing his catching duties. Matt Haverkamp added a 2-3 game with a double, two runs scored and an RBI, while Dalton Hiltbrand and Evan Hermesch had two hits each for Seneca. Oller's performances earned him McDonald's "Player of the Game" honors on Kanzaland radio. Cody Rottinghaus picked up the pitching win with a complete game giving up three runs, on five hits, four walks, while striking out 15.

Sabetha was led by Bauman in the loss who was 2-4 with an RBI and runs scored.

In Game two, Sabetha jumped out to the early lead and never relinquished the lead as Bauman continued his offensive day blasting a solo homerun in a two-run first inning for Sabetha. Sabetha added another run in the third on three walks and a Seneca error and broke the game open in the fifth with a four-run inning led by a three RBI double by Adam Herl. Seneca broke through scoring in the bottom of the fifth but only managed one run falling 7-1 in the contest.

Kyler Krebs and Bauman combined for the win on the mound for Sabetha, while Bauman offensive ly was 2-2 with two runs scored and a homer. Seneca was held to just three hits in the game, with Tim Nolte registering two of the three hits going 2-2 in the contest.

With the split Seneca moves to 3-1 on the season and Sabetha now sits at 4-5 on the year.

Frankfort Sweeps Hiawatha in League Double-Header

Originally schedule to be a double-header at Noble Park in Hiawatha, the games were moved to Frankfort due to field conditions and the home team Frankfort earned the sweep winning 13-8 in Game one and 12-11 in six innings in Game two.

Frankfort capitalized on 27 free passes issued by Hiawatha on the night in both games combined to earn the pair of victories.

Game one the offense started early for both teams as team scored two runs in the first inning, but Frankfort took the lead after a five run bottom of the second. Hiawatha battled back to ultimately tie the game in the top of the fifth at 8-8 but Frankfort again posted a five run inning, regaining control in the contest. Frankfort was led by the trio of Cody Huerter, Brett Burdiek and Sam Steinlage who accounted for seven hits and seven RBI's between them. While, Taylor Jacobsen led Hiawatha in the loss going 3-3 with five RBI's, a double and walk; Dakota Bayles added a 2-5 performance with three runs scored.

In Game two Hiawatha had a 7-0 lead through two innings but three runs in the third and an eight run fourth got Frankfort back into the contest. Hiawatha managed to plate three more runs in the top of the fifth to force extra innings in the schedule five inning game, but in the bottom fo the sixth Frankfort got an RBI single by Buessing to secure the win. Eight of the 10 Frankfort batters in the contest registered a hit and Brett Burdiek blasted a two run homer in the contest.

Taylor Jacobsen highlighted the game for Hiawatha once again as he went 3-4 with three runs scored in Game two, while Dalton Lehmkuhl was 2-4 with a runs scored and walk in Game two.

With the wins Frankfort moved to 2-1 on the season, while Hiawatha fell to 0-6 this season.
