Centralia Boys & Valley Heights Girls Win 1A Team State Track Titles, While TVL Dominates Competition

Sixty seven medals were earned in Class 1A by area athletes all coming from the Twin Valley League, with 10 State Championships won and two team State Titles.

The 1A meet was dominated by TVL athletes claiming a medal in just about every event at State in the boys and girls competitions. The Centralia Panther boys and Valley Heights Mustang girls each claimed team State titles with plenty of great performances.

For Centralia it was the third boys State title this year as seven guys contributed to the Panthers 1A track title this year. Panthers notched 51 points, behind ten top eight finishes as Centralia had a top eight competitor in every event they competed in and won the title by just two and half points. Centralia earned three second place finishes, one fourth place, four fifth place finishes, one sixth place, one seventh place and one eighth place. Darrian Turner earned four medals at State as he took second in the long jump, fifth in the 200 meter dash and seventh in the 100 meter dash, while partnering with Wyatt VanDorn, Brett Burdiek and JT Rosine to finish second in the 4x100 meter relay. Burdiek added to his day with two more medals taking fifth in the 110 meter hurdles and eighth place in the high jump. Sam Steinlage earned three medals for the Panther as he took fourth in the triple jump, fifth in the long jump and sixth in the discus. Cody Huerter and Joey Ferron also competed for the Panthers both in field events, as Huerter notched a second place finish in the pole vault and Ferron took fifth in the shot put.

Centralia girls had four medalists on the day led by a third place performance form Tara Bergman in the discus, while Riley Hanzlik placed fourth in the javelin and Chelsea Huerter tied for fourth in the pole vault. On the track, Mayda Stallbaumer took eighth place in the 800 meter run.

For the Valley Heights girls they posted 62 points on their way to the team 1A State track title with only three girls in competition competing in eight events. Of the eight events all but one finish was third place or better for the Lady Mustangs. Brandi Jo Roepke competed in four events and her best performance came in the long jump as she won the State title with a leap of 17'02.25, while placing second in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes on the track and third in the 400 meter dash. Sidney Blackburn earned another State title for the Mustangs as she won the discus with a toss of 108'07, while placing fifth in the shot put. Shelby Vermetten notched a pair of silver medal performances for the Mustangs in both the shot put and discus, helping them to the State title.

Elijah Smith led the Mustang boys at State track winning three State titles after winning two a year ago as a sophomore. Smith leapt his way to wins in the triple jump and long jump with leaps of 45'10.25 and 21'10.75, respectively, while also winning the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14.68. Smith also took fourth place in the 200 meter dash. Derek Trimble also earned a medal for the Mustangs tying for seventh place in the pole vault. Valley Heights boys finished fifth as a team at State with just Smith and Trimble competing.

Hanover Wildcats were led by a pair of State Champs at State track both in boy’s competition as the 4x100 meter relay team and Ethan Fritschi won State titles. The quartet of Evan Zabokrtsky, Matthew White, Andrew Bruna and Preston Jueneman posted a time of 44.08 to win the 4x100 meter relay, while Fritschi notched a toss of 49'05.50 to win the shot put title. Both Jueneman and Zabokrtsky teamed up with Austin Diederich and Trey Loshe to take second in the 4x400 meter relay, while Loshe partnered with Paden Pralle, Adam Zarybnicky and Michael Jueneman to finish eighth in the 4x800 meter relay. Both Zabokrtsky and Preston Jueneman each earned an individual third place medal, too in the 200 and 400 meter dashes, respectively, helping Hanover as a team place third in 1A boy’s competition.

Both the Linn girls and boys notched top 10 team performances at State track as the girls placed fourth and the boys finished seventh as a team. The girls were led by a State title in the 4x100 meter relay as the group of Brooke Diederich, Acacia Thalmann, Kesiah Thalmann and Kendra Bargman posted a time of 50.69 to win the competition. Bargman and Kesiah Thalmann also teamed up with Rachel Bott and Nicole Ohlde to place third in the 4x400 meter relay for Linn. Individually, Acacia Thalmann and Diederich both earned a third place medal in the high jump and long jump, respectively, while Kaylie Rahe took fifth in the 300 meter hurdles on the track and Bargman placed fifth and eighth in the 200 and 100 meter dashes, respectively.

Linn boys were led by a pair of silver medals by the speedster, Kurt Van der Merwe who took second in the 100 and 200 meter dashes, while teaming up with Brett Peters, Chad Diederich and Chad Gross to finish sixth in the 4x100 meter relay. Peters added another sixth place to his day finishing sixth in the shot put, while Josh Meyer took sixth in the javelin and Gross earned the bronze in the high jump.

For the B&B Falcons six medals were earned at State including senior, Laura Sudbeck winning the shot put title for the third time in her career posting a toss of 40'09.50. Sam Wessel and Ashley Kramer each medaled in the girl’s triple jump placing fifth and eighth, respectively, while Cassidy Hulsing took seventh in the high jump. On the boy’s side of competition, Jacob Koelzer grabbed a fifth place finish in the 100 meter dash and Cameron Haug finished eighth in the javelin.

Axtell Eagles earned five medals at State led by by three fifth place finishes as Bradie Schmitz finished fifth in the 400 meter dash; Kiersten Talbot took fifth in the 800 meter run and team of Colton Buessing, Christian Buessing, Zach Heinen and Tracy Schmitz finsihed fifth in the 4x800 meter relay. Tracy Schmitz added an individual eighth place in the boys 3200 meter run, while the girl’s 4x800 meter relay team of Courtney Heinen, Talbot, Ashley Buessing and Susan Peschel also placed eighth.

Clifton-Clyde Eagles flew home with a pair of State champions as William Ohlde won the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 39.45 and Kourtni Hubert won the girls javelin with a toss of 131'07. Hubert teamed up with Airika Long, Taylor Seifert and Elizabeth Nobert to finish fourth in the 4x100 meter relay, while Brendon Asch placed seventh in the 300 meter hurdles and Ohlde added a third place in the 110 meter hurdles to his State title.

Frankfort Wildcats, Doniphan West Mustangs and Blue Valley-Randolph Rams all had medalists also at State track. For Frankfort, Adam Koch took home two medals placing third in the 1600 and fifth in the 3200 meter run, while Lucas Adams finished third in the pole vault. Doniphan West had one medalist’s at State that was McKenzie Blevins who placed fifth in the girl’s long jump, while the Blue Valley team of Zach Rootring, Kyle Clifton, Chase Carey and Marshall Carey finished third in the 4x800 meter relay.

The Twin Valley League continued to show their dominance in high school sports earning 10 individual State 1A track titles and two team track titles, along with winning two football titles, a girls’ basketball, two volleyball, boy’s golf State title this year along with plenty of other top notch performances.
