Riverside Boys Win Home Track & Field Relays While Girls Take Second

Riverside Cyclones boys and girls track teams whirled themselves to strong performances early in the season at their home Relays competition as they hosted nine other teams in competition, including a pair of local teams in Doniphan West and Oskaloosa.

In the boys competition the Cyclones blew past the competition amassing 175 points to claim first place; 67 points better than second place. Oskaloosa boys took home third place as a team and Doniphan West grabbed fifth out of ten teams. On the girl’s side it was Bishop LeBlond winning the team crown, while the lady Cyclones of Riverside took second place just five points behind first. Lady Mustangs of Doniphan West matched their counterparts taking fifth place like the boys and Oskaloosa girls placed eighth.

Riverside boys were led by 10 first place performances on the day with a pair of individuals claiming three gold medals. Andrae McGaughy and Dillon Logston each won three events at their home meet helping lead Riverside to their first place team finish. McGaughy hurdled his way to the 110 and 300 meter hurdle titles with times of 16.48 and 44.32, while leaping his way to a win in the triple jump behind a leap of 39'10. Logston won all three of his events in the field competitions winning the high jump with a leap of 5'10, grabbing the gold in the long jump behind a leap of 19'2 and vaulting his way to the win in the pole vault with a vault of 11'0.

The other four first place showings came in the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relays, 100 meter dash and javelin throw for the Cyclones. Cyclones ran to a win in the 4x100 with a time of 47.44 and posted a time of 3:47.37 to win the 4x400 meter relay. Grabbing the gold in the 100 meter dash was Breyer Miller who posted a time of 11.82, while Cody Walker tossed his way to the win in the javelin with a toss of 156'10. Walker added to his day taking third in the discus on top of first in the javelin, while Miller added to his gold, too taking third in the 200 meter dash.

Four other Cyclones earned top three finishes, too as Lynell Pritchard took home second in the 800 meter run, while Drew Hoffman and Mason McCall took second and third in the pole vault giving the Cyclones a sweep of the top three spots in the pole vault. Another second place was garnered by the Riverside 4x200 meter relay team. Riverside 4x100 WT Relay team also took home a top three finish placing second.

Oskaloosa boys who took home third place as a team were led on the day by Justin Sharp who took home second in the high jump and third in the high jump, while Ben Harvey took home third in the javelin for the Bears. Oskaloosa also took home first in the 4x100 WT Relay with a time of 53.82. Dillon Grother took home the only top three showing for the Bears in the triple jump placing second.

Doniphan West who placed fifth as a team was led by performances on the track. Kody Collins led the Mustangs with a second place in the 110 meter hurdles and third place in the 300 meter hurdles, while Lane Spiker won the 200 meter dash with a time of 24.35 and picked up a second place showing in the 400 meter dash. Mustangs 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay teams each picked up second place performances.

In the girls competition the Riverside lady Cyclones led the performances from the area. Lady Cyclones were led by four first place performances two on the track and two in the field. The Cyclones 4x100 meter relay team raced to a time of 55.42 to claim first, while Channdler Barger posted a time of 14.06 to claim first in the 100 meter dash. On the field, Keira Juhl took home first in the shot put behind a toss of 33'11 and Jaden Cox place first in the triple jump with a leap of 31'06.5. Both Juhl and Cox added other top three finishes to their days as Juhl took home third in the discus, while Cox placed second in the long jump.

Emily Richter and Angi Meng both earned top three showings for Riverside in the field events, too taking third and second respectively in the triple jump and the javelin. Richter added a second place showing in the 200 meter dash, too, while the Cyclones relay team also took third in the 4x200 competition.

For the lady Mustangs of the Doniphan West who placed fifth as a team they were led by Kenzie Blevins who took home first in the long jump with a leap of 13'11 and placed second in the triple jump. Alyssa Clark was the only other lady Mustang to register a top three finishes as she grabbed a pair of third place showings in the shot put and javelin.

Oskaloosa took home eighth place as a team but did have a pair of three performances on the day. The lady Bears 4x200 meter relay team took home second place, while CJ Kilgo placed second in the 400 meter dash.

Teams will look to build upon the performances at the Riverside Relays early in the track season, as they look to improve throughout the year and gear up for the Regionals and State down the road.
