Valley Heights Mustang Girls & Boys Earn Spots at 1A-DI State Tourney

It was double the pleasure for the Valley Heights Mustangs on their home floor on Saturday night as both the girls and boys clinched the sub-state 1A-Division I titles to earn a spot at State in Emporia next week.

The Lady Mustangs took home the 57-42 win over the Linn Bulldogs, while the boys got a late free throw to earn the 42-41 win over Centralia.

Starting the night off the Lady Mustangs continued their strong season getting out to a 27-19 lead at halftime and closed out the game behind a 15-8 fourth quarter to earn the 57-42 over Linn. The Lady Mustangs were led by sophomore, Brandi Jo Roepke who scored 26 points, while Sidney Blackburn posted 19 points. Valley Heights with the win moved to 22-1 on the season and stretched their current win streak to 13 straight games.

The boys followed up the girls showing by earning a spot at State also topping Centralia 42-41 with a late free throw by Bennett Bargdill to give the Mustangs the win. Valley Heights worked out to the 25-20 lead at the half on their home floor against Centralia, but the Panthers came back with a 13-5 third quarter and led 33-30 after three periods. Mustangs outscored Centralia by four in the fourth, with no point more important than the late free throw by Bargdill. Elijah Smith paced the Mustangs with 14 points, while Charles Musil chipped 13 points, helping Valley Heights to 21-2 on the season.

The TVL regular season champs are headed to Emporia to look to had more hardware to their seasons as the Valley Heights Mustangs girls and boys punched tickets to the 1A-Division I State tournament.
