Maur Hill Mount Academy sweeps Oskaloosa to end losing streak

The regular season is wrapping up and teams are looking to finish strong heading into substate. For Maur Hill Mount Academy, there were bumps in the road, but after the toughest part of the schedule, the squads bounced back with a sweep over Oskaloosa. The Lady Ravens snapped a three-game losing streak with a 45-26 victory while the boys stopped a four-game skid with a 59-46 win.

 
There was a common theme in the first quarter for the Lady Ravens: get the ball down low. Sparked by junior Kendra Brull’s seven points, Maur Hill Mount Academy jumped out to an 11-3 lead after the opening quarter. Brull added seven more points in the second and the Lady Ravens went into the locker room up 23-12. Oskaloosa made a charge and put the deficit under double digits in the second half, but Maur Hill Mount Academy hung on for the 45-26 victory.
 
Junior Kendra Brull finished with 23 points to pace the Lady Ravens and grabbed many rebounds to be the Bank of Atchison Player of the Game. Sophomore Avery Lewman chipped in 11 points to help MHMA. For Oskaloosa, sophomore Maddy Miller led the Lady Bears with nine points.
 
Maur Hill Mount Academy is now 8-10 on the season while Oskaloosa falls to 1-17.
 
In guys play, Oskaloosa junior Justin Sharp was scorching hot to start the game. Sharp averaged 10 points a game heading to Friday night and he scored 10 points in the opening quarter to give the Bears a 14-10 lead after one quarter of play. Sharp followed up the first with another 10-point quarter, but Maur Hill Mount Academy stormed back. Junior Dillon Kramer and freshman Nick Caudle combined for 16 of the 19 points in the second quarter to put the Ravens behind one point, trailing 30-29.
 
The third quarter was all Maur Hill Mount Academy as the Ravens built a nine-point cushion heading into the fourth quarter. Oskaloosa cut the deficit to as little as four points, but the Ravens made free throws down the stretch to win 59-46.
 
Junior Dillon Kramer and freshman Nick Caudle scored 16 points apiece to be the Bank of Atchison Players of the Game for Maur Hill Mount Academy. Justin Sharp only scored five points in the fourth quarter to finish with 25 points leading all scorers.
 
Maur Hill Mount Academy improved to 11-8 on the season and takes on McLouth to wrap up the season on Tuesday while Oskaloosa fell to 3-15 and battle Jefferson County North at home.
