Highland Track Performs Well at Home in Final Regular Season Meet of Indoor Season

Highland Scotties track put together a great performance in the final regular season indoor track meet of the year as they played host this past Saturday, preparing for Regionals on the horizon coming up this weekend.

Scotties put up 18 top three performances on the day with multiple other top flight performances in competition, as Highland saw six first place finishes earned by Scottie athletes to lead the way.

Sophomore, Jasmine Miller paced the way with three first place finishes on the day winning the 200 meter dash, 400 meter run and 55 meter hurdles. Miller posted a time of 27.30 to win the 200 meter dash, while registering a 1:03.60 time in the 400 meter run and ran to a time of 8.37 to win the 55 meter hurdles.

Freshman, Mandy Wilson added another first place performance in the women’s competition as she won the 500 meter run, posting a time 1:19.23 nearly four seconds better than second place. In the boys competition former Oskaloosa Bear, Dalton Ricketts took home first in the 400 meter run, posting a time of 51.63, while Steven Hill leapt his way to a win in the triple jump for the Scotties posting a leap of 14.24m.

Headlining the rest of the competition on the day was a few Kanzaland area athletes like former Horton Charger, Jacob Lott who placed second in both the weight throw and shot put with tosses of 14.64m and 14.48m. While former Blue Valley-Randolph Ram, Annie Ross took home a second place and third place showing on the day in the 400 meter dash (1:04.35) and the 200 meter dash (28.70).

Crystal Hoard also took home a top three finish posting a time of 3:16.24 in the 1000 meter run to place third, while Shania Carthan leapt to third place in the long jump with a leap of 5.11m. Carthan added a fourth place in the triple jump (10.43m) and eighth place in the 55 meter dash (7.68) to her third place performance in the long jump. Taylor Brown added a second place showing in the high jump with a leap of 1.51m, while Nicole Morgan took home fourth behind a leap of 1.41m.

Another local athlete in former Doniphan West Mustang, Kassidy Blevins tossed her way to 11th in the shot put with a throw of 9.96m.

Other performances on the day by Scotties in the women’s competition included: sixth place by Hannah Olsen in 3000 meter run (12:40.66); eighth place by Rebecca Geib in the one mile run (6:20.98); ninth place by Kelsey Warren in the one mile run (6:35.62); Thaina Jensen finished 16th in the shot put (7.85m) and Krista Wilgers finished 11th in the weight throw (10.75m).

On the men’s side of competition both Scotties Relay teams took home second place finishes in the 4x400 and 4x800 meter relays with times of 3:35.85 and 8:20.69. Clayton Stoppkotte took home second for the Scotties in the 1000 meter run posting a time of 2:44.89, while his teammates Seth Parres and Hiawatha native, Chris Babel placed sixth (2:47.67) and seventh (2:54.44) in the same race. Parres and Chris Babel added a fifth and sixth place showing, respectively in the one mile run with times of 4:49.53 and 4:50.60; Jonathan Oliva took home 11th in that same race with a time of 5:02.38.

Two third place finishes were garnered by DeAnte Ambler who ran his way to times of 6.45 and 23.41 in the 55 meter dash and 200 meter dash to earn third place finishes.

Hiawatha native, Kooper Winterscheidt took home sixth place in the 500 meter run with a time of 1:11.72. While Highland had four guys compete in the 3000 meter run taking third, fourth, sixth and eighth place in the competition. Brian Martinez lead the way with a time of 9:33.27 for third, Hiawatha native, Nic Babel posted a time of 9:47.74 for fourth, Carlos Pino took sixth (9:59.63) and Adrian Sias placed eighth (10:13.61).

Scotties now gear up for Regionals coming up this weekend and then the National Championships in the weeks to come.
