Holton Wins Big Seven Wrestling Tourney While Many Others Have Top Flight Performances

All the Big Seven League wrestling squads took to the mats one final time in the regular season facing off in the league meet at Perry Lecompton on Saturday.

At the end of the day's competition it was the two ranked Big Seven League teams sitting atop the team totals with the number one 4A team in Holton grabbing first place posting 213 points, 50 points better than second place. ACCHS Tigers who rank fourth in 3-2-1A took home second place in their first Big Seven League wrestling tournament, joining the league this year, tallying 163 points. Royal Valley Panthers rounded out the top three team finishes finishing one point ahead of Jeff West who took home fourth as the teams finished with 123 and 122 points, respectively.

The rest of the team performances shook out with Sabetha taking fifth, Santa Fe Trail placing sixth, Perry Lecompton seventh, Riverside eighth and Hiawatha finished ninth.

Big Seven champion, Holton Wildcats earned that title with six individual champions on the day, three second place showings, a third place and two fourth place finishes. Tyler Price (120lbs), Justin Pool (126lbs), Justin Rieschick (138lbs), Lucas Lovvorn (152lbs), Clayton Folk (195lbs) and Bradley Hooper (220lbs) all registered first place for the Wildcats on the day.

Price posted a 3-0 day in competition with three pinfall wins in 30 seconds, 4:26 and 3:24 in the championship bout, while Pool also finished 3-0 on the day with a bye, pinfall win 3:35 and a 7-5 decision win in the championship bout. Justin Rieschick joined Price and Pool with a perfect 3-0 record on the day with a bye, major decision 12-0 win and a 1-0 decision win in the championship match. The 3-0 records continued to compile for Holton as Lovvorn, Folk and Hooper each posted those marks at their weight classes. Lovvorn posted wins via a bye, major decision 13-0 and 4-0 decision, while Folk won all his matches by decision: major decision 14-4, 5-2 and 4-2 in the championship bout. Hooper earned a pinfall win in 21 seconds and decision wins of 6-3 and 4-2 to go 3-0.

Second place was picked up by Cooper Zeller (220lbs), Dominic Buterakos (113lbs)  and Kyle Mick (182lbs) for the Wildcats, while Spencer Baum (145lbs) notched third place and Mason Baum (170lbs) and Jameson Lutz (106lbs) both placed fourth.

For the ACCHS Tigers it was four first place showings leading the Tigers with a pair of second place finishes and three fourth place finishes, too. Hunter Ostertag (106lbs), Logan Bowen (132lbs), Kyle Chew (160lbs) and Scott Birkinsha (170lbs) each wrestled their way to first place finishes for the Tigers. Ostertag finished 3-0 on the day with a pair of pinfall wins in 24 and 33 seconds and won the championship bout with a 9-2 decision. For Bowen he went 3-0 with a bye and pinfall wins of 1:11 and 45 seconds, while Chew earned three wins by major decision 12-4 and pinfalls 3:14 and 4:43. Birkinsha took first with his 3-0 record with wins via a bye, major decision 13-4 and 8-5 decision in the championship bout.

Second place was grabbed by Justin Wagner (152lbs) and Willy Dieckman (138lbs) for the Tigers, while Ryan Vollmer (195lbs), Chance Montgomery (126lbs) and Jordon Herrman (113lbs) all placed fourth.

The Royal Valley Panthers were led by Bryce Golightley who took home the Panthers lone first place finish going 3-0 with a win via bye, 1-0 decision and 9-4 decision in the championship bout. Pallas Tye (126lbs) and Zack Lux (132lbs) both took home second place finishes, while the Panthers posted five third place showings by Chance Ogden (170lbs), Matthew Bailey (182lbs), Jonathan Frederick-Munsell (152lbs), Noah Hart (138lbs) and Austin Ashley (120lbs).

Jeff West Tigers who took home fourth place as a team, had their day headlined by Justin Scott (285lbs) yet again as he remained unbeaten on the season posting the Tigers lone first place on the day. Scott went 3-0 on the day with three more pinfall wins winning them all in under one-minute: 21, 42, 58 seconds. Tigers also took home three second place performances with Sam Shenk (195lbs), Jesse Best (145lbs) and Tucker Schreiner (120lbs), while Jace Holmes (160lbs) and Nathan Holloman (126lbs) placed third and RJ Edwards (220lbs) took fourth place for the Tigers.

Sabetha Bluejays earned nine top four finishes with Taylor Meyer (220lbs) and Michael Baumgartner (170lbs) paced the Bluejays on the mats with second place performances in the league tournament. Both, Brandon Harrell (195lbs), Seth Harrell (106lbs) and Jacob Leuthhold (285lbs) each took home third place finishes, while Brendon Rokey (160lbs), Ben Meyer (138lbs), Nate Niehues (132lbs) and Matt Burdiek (145lbs) all took home fourth place performances.

Perry Lecompton registered two top four finishes with RJ Whitaker (182lbs) took home first place for the Kaws going 3-0 with a win via a bye and a pair of 2-1 decision wins. Adam Herman joined Whitaker with a top four showing placing third at 220lbs.

For Riverside their lone top four showing came by Coleton Ruhl (113lbs) who took home a third place finish, while Hiawatha did not have a top four finish but had four competitors in action on the day.

With the regular season of action on the mats in the books teams turn their attention to postseason wrestling with Regionals looming on February 21st and 22nd.
