Atchison travels to KC Washington and splits season series

First time around, the night ended with two overtime thrillers. That wasn’t the case on Tuesday night as the Atchison Lady Red downed Kansas City Washington 76-53 while the boys squad of KC Washington beat the Redmen 79-62

Atchison sprinted out of the gates and used the paint to its advantage as junior Laurene Cushinberry and senior Ashton Ettleman combined for 16 points to give the Lady Red a 20-13 lead after the opening quarter. In the second, Atchison continued to pounce on the Lady Wildcats to take a 40-23 lead into the locker room. From there, the Lady Red cruised to a 76-53 victory.
 
The Bank of Atchison Player of the Game went to junior Laurene Cushinberry, who paced the Lady Red with 25 points, great defense and a pulled down a bunch of rebounds. Senior Ashton Ettleman dropped 20 points and senior Arika Smith recorded 19 points, dished out a bunch of assists and grabbed rebounds. Senior Doniesha Womack didn’t score 48 this time, but finished with 30 points to lead Washington in the loss.
 
Atchison improved to 6-8 on the season and 3-2 in the Kansas City-Atchison League while Washington suffered its first league loss on the season, going to 3-1 and 5-8 overall.
 
In the boys game, Washington used the energy from the juiced home crowd to gain an early lead, but Atchison calmed down and battled back to be up 22-19 after the first quarter. Both teams traded buckets in the second period, but the Wildcats built a four-point lead heading into halftime, up 36-32. Washington dominated the third quarter and stretched the lead out to 15 multiple times in the fourth. The Redmen battled back and cut the deficit to as little as five, but Washington drilled free throws to win 79-62.
 
KC Washington had four players in double figures with junior Kalem Harrison leading the charge with 17 points. Junior William Jefferson chipped in 15, senior Shakair Love recorded 13 and junior James McNeal had 12 off the bench.
 
Senior Tanner Huntington paced the Redmen with 14 points, but sophomore Jerome Luster Jr. was the Bank of Atchison Player of the Game, finishing with 13 points and a bunch of steals. Sophomore Wykeen Gill Jr. also scored 12 points.
 
Washington went to 9-5 on the season and sits in the driver’s seat of the Kansas City-Atchison League with a 4-1 record. The Wildcats battle Kansas City Schlagle next. For Atchison, the Redmen are 9-5 overall with a 3-2 league record and have tough matchups against Sumner and Harmon later on in the week.
