Atchison Leads Area Performances at Home Final Flurry Wrestling Invite

Mother Nature has changed the sports schedule in Northeast Kansas recently and not only affected basketball but the action on the mats, too, rescheduling the Final Flurry wrestling tournament to this past weekend.

The host team for the Final Flurry, Atchison registered the highest area team performance on the day taking home third place behind St. Thomas Aquinas and Shawnee Mission Northwest who finished first and second, respectively. Other area teams competing on the day included Oskaloosa/McLouth, Immaculata, Maur Hill-Mount Academy and Jeff West finishing fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively.

Atchison was lead on the day by ranked 4A grappler, Tyler Harris who posted a 4-0 record at 170lbs to earn the first place in his weight class. Tyler registered all four of his wins by fall on the day for the Redmen. While, Harris is the only ranked Atchison wrestler he wasn't the only Redmen grappler to earn first place at their home tournament as Taylor Funk posted a 4-0 record at 285lbs to earn first place, also. Funk like his counterpart Harris won all his bouts via fall.

Spencer Vice also won his weight class for the Redmen going 1-0 by beating a grappler from Maur Hill as the only other entry at 132lbs for the day’s action.

Redmen had other solid performances on the day as Bradly Pottroff (220lbs) and Jeff Wallingford (126lbs) each took home second place posting a 2-1 records, while Ben Vanderweide (145lbs) took home third place going 3-2 in action. Other Atchison wrestlers competing on the day included: Charlie Phillips (152lbs) who posted a 2-3 record, Donovan Duncan (182lbs) went 0-2 in action and Parker Welch (138lbs) finished 0-4 on the day.

Oskaloosa/McLouth on the day was led by four second place performances both Dusty Bammes (138lbs) and Lance Hickman (170lbs) each posted 3-1 records to earn second place showings, while Hannah Nave (113lbs) and Griffon Haxten (182lbs) each competed with just two other wrestlers finishing 1-1 on the day to win second place at their weight class.

Other Oskaloosa/McLouth wrestlers competing on the day included: Ben Harvey (160lbs) 2-3 record, Griffin Malney (145lbs) 1-4 record, Zach Thomas (120lbs) 0-1 record, Zach Coleman (220lbs) 0-3 record and Wyatt Troupe (152lbs) 0-5 record.

For Immaculata they registered fifth place as a team lead by Max Campbell (160lbs) who took home third place after posting a 3-2 record. Cole Humble (152lbs) and Jared Clothier (145lbs) both posted 1-4 records in their weight classes, while Anthony Brigg (170lbs) finished the day with a 0-4 record.

Maur Hill was highlighted on the day at the Final Flurry by Sam Panchot (152lbs) who posted a 3-2 record too notch a third place finish. While other Maur Hill grapplers competed on the day: Blake Wilson (126lbs) posted a 1-2 record, Austin Geenens (138lbs) posted a 1-3 record, Chris Petesch (145lbs) tallied a 1-4 record, Kenny Oliviera (132lbs) finished with a 0-1 record and Emilio Galatas (113lbs) finished with a 0-2 record and Dave Keister (285lbs) finished with an 0-4 record.

For Jeff West just a few competitors hit the mats on the day at the Final Flurry and RJ Edwards (220lbs) lead the Tigers with a first place showing going 3-0 with all three wins coming by fall.

Kilian Norton (285lbs) took home third place for the Tigers by posting a 2-2 record in competition. Other Tigers that competed on the day included: Dalton Davis (170lbs) posted a 1-3 record, Colton Fox (106lbs) went 0-1 on the day, Jace Holms (160lbs) finished with a 1-4 record and Chase Montgomery (160lbs) tallied a 0-5 record.

The wrestling season is starting to come to a close with teams gearing up for postseason action on the mats.
