ACCHS & Sabetha Wrestling Squads Place 3rd & 4th, While D-West & Pleasant Ridge Have Top Performers at Rossville Invite

Nine area wrestling squads competed at the Rossville Invitational on Saturday to get their 2014 portion of the season in full swing and many registered top flight performances on the day including four area wrestlers notching first place finishes and two teams finished in the top four of 17 teams competing on the day.

The number two team in Class 3-2-1A the ACCHS Tigers continued their strong season as they took home a third place finish at the Rossville Invitational posting 158 points, only one-point behind second place and 10 points out of first place. Tigers were led by four second finishes on the day from: Hunter Ostertag (106lbs), Willy Dieckmann (138lbs), Justin Wagner (152lbs) and Scott Birkinsha (170lbs). Freshman, Ostertag after a first round bye won his next two matches by fall but fell in the 106lbs championship by major decision 9-0. Dieckmann put together back-to-back pinfall wins to open the day then made the championship bout by a 13-2 major decision win in the semifinals but lost a close title match by 5-2 decision at 138lbs. The senior, Wagner took down his first three opponents by fall but fell in the 152lbs championship bout by major decision 20-8. For Birkinsha after opening with a bye he won via pin and 9-4 decision before losing a tough championship bout at 170lbs by 5-3 decision.

Tigers on top of their four second place finishes grabbed a fourth, fifth, four sixth place finishes and a seventh place finish on the day. Junior, Bratton Forbes took home fourth at 220lbs going 3-2 on the day in action, while Dalton Armstrong took home fifth place at 120lbs. Caleb Jones (126lbs), Kyle Chew (160lbs), Dillion Weaver (182lbs) and Ryan Vollmer (195lbs) all registered sixth place finishes in their weight classes, while Sam Reiss (145lbs) took home seventh place.

Sabetha Bluejays followed the Tigers in the team standings finishing fourth place, as ranked wrestler, Jacob Leuthold lead the Bluejays on the day with a second place finish at 285lbs by 3-1 with a bye, win by pin and decision before falling by pin in championship bout.  Brandon Harrell added a third place showing for the Bluejays at 195lbs going 4-1 on the day, after falling in the semifinals Harrell answered with a 5-3 decision win and then a 1-0 decision win to take third place.  Third place performances for Sabetha didn’t stop at Harrell as Michael Baumgartner too finished the day with back-to-back wins to grab third place at 170lbs; Trei Harrell at 120lbs took third place also going 4-1.

Bluejays on the day added a fourth place finish by Ben Meyer (138lbs), fifth place by Taylor Meyer (220lbs) and sixth place by Riley Wisdom (113lbs). Seth Harrell (106lbs), Nate Neihues (132lbs), Kyler Krebs (152lbs) and Brandon Poe (182lbs) all posted seventh place showing for Sabetha helping the team to a fourth place performance.

The rest of the area teams notched eighth, 10th, 13th, 14th, 15th and 17th place performances with Pleasant Ridge, Doniphan West, Perry Lecompton, Maur Hill-Mount Academy, Hiawatha/Horton and Immaculata, finishing in that order.

Pleasant Ridge and Doniphan West each saw a pair of wrestlers take home individual first place finishes on the day. For the Rams Blake Graham (126lbs) and Logan McKinney (220lbs) finished the day unbeaten to win their weight classes. Graham went 4-0 on the day with a bye and won his three matches all by pinfall to claim the 126lbs title, while McKinney did the same as Graham in his matches to win the 220lb weight class. Pleasant Ridge also had Brandon Broddie (120lbs) take second place, Colton Doty (195lbs) notch at fifth place finish and Nic Hyde (145lbs) place eighth.

Doniphan West Mustang ranked wrestlers Garrett Dunlap (160lbs) and Tristan Speer from Troy (195lbs) each continued to roll this season by taking first at their weight class at the Rossville Invitational. Dunlap on the day went 4-0 with three pinfall wins and a 9-4 decision in the other match, while Speer went 4-0 with a bye, two pinfall wins and a 3-1 decision win in the championship bout. A third, sixth and seventh place finish was also grabbed by Mustang grapplers on the day. Kody Collins (145lbs) took home third, Nakoma Gomer (138lbs) placed sixth and Dalton Masters (220lbs) placed seventh.

Perry Lecompton, Maur Hill and Hiawatha/Horton each had five top eight finishers, while Immaculata had one wrestler finish in the top eight.

For the Kaws it was a second place for RJ Whitaker (182lbs), Tyler Ball (160lbs) took fourth place, Tyler Barnes (106lbs) place sixth, Wyatt Williams (120lbs) notched a seventh place and Cody Williams (170lbs) placed eighth.

Maur Hill was led by Blake Wilson (126lbs) who wrestled his way to a third place finish. Emilio Galatas (113lbs) took home a fifth place, Ben Pickman (170lbs) a seventh place, while Kenny Oliviera (132lbs) and Kyle Mason (152lbs) each place eighth in their weight class for the Ravens.

Hiawatha/Horton was led by a fourth place by Kristian Costa (113lbs) while Tyler Lowe (285lbs) took home a sixth place. Makayla Taff (106lbs) Dexter Campbell (120lbs) and Keenan Hinton (195lbs) all three notched eight place finishes for Hiawatha/Horton squad.

The Immaculata Raiders on the day saw their lone top eight finish come at the hands of Bruce Stanley (152lbs) who took home fourth place in his weight class.

Overall the Rossville Invitational was a strong showing in the first tournament action of the 2014 year for many area teams with great performances all around.
