Former Kanzaland Track Stars Performer Well at Bill Easton Indoor Classic, Along with Highland & Benedictine Track Athletes

Multiple former track and field athletes from the Kanzaland area now competing at the college level competed at the Bill Easton Classic Indoor Track and Field competition at the University of Kansas on Saturday, along with track athletes from Highland and Benedictine.

Leading the way with the best performance of the day of area athletes was former Jackson Heights Cobra, Cory Keehn a junior at Fort Hays State University took home first place in the men’s 3000 meter run competition out racing 23 other racers with a time of 8:29.94.

While former Axtell Eagle, Audrey Schmitz took home seventh place out of 19 runners in the women’s 3000 meter run competition posting a time of 10:57.62.

One other former Kanzaland area athlete not competing at Highland or Benedictine competed at the Bil Easton Classic, too and that was form Royal Valley Panther, Aaron Blevins who took 11th place in pole vault (4.91m) event.

For the Highland Community College Scotties there were plenty of solid performances throughout the day against top flight competition at KU. Leading the way on the women’s side of competition was sophomore, Crystal Hoard and freshman, Kireston Luptak each registered fourth place finishes in a competition. Hoard raced to fourth in the 1000 meter run with a time of 3:19.41, while Luptak place fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 10.16m. Luptak added a 13th place in the long jump to her day (4.72m) and 21st in the 60 meter dash (8.56). While Shaina Carthan joined her Scottie teammate in both the long jump (4.71m) and triple jump (9.49m) with 14th and 10th place finishes and also the 60m Dash taking 22nd (9.16).

Multiple other Scottie women track athletes finished in the top 10 in events as Jasmine Miller took home sixth in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 9.26, while also placing 12th in the 200 meter dash (27.68). Highland runner, Taylor Smith-Brown joined Miller in the 60m hurdles placing 17th (10.69) and also tied for ninth in the high jump (1.51m), while Annie Ross ran with Miller in the 200m Dash (29.07) for 13th place. Smith-Brown was joined in the high jump by another Scottie competitor as Bailey Murger tied for ninth, also.

Former Doniphan West Mustang and now Highland Scottie, Kassidy Blevins took home eighth in the shot put (9.65m) on the day, while Thaina Jensen finished 12th also for the Scotties in the competition (7.38m). Freshman, Krista Wilgers took home ninth for Highland in the weight throw (7.31m), while Hanneh Olsen place 15th in the 3000 meter run (13:10.68), Kelsey Warren finished ninth in the One Mile Run (6:18.39) and Mandy Wilson earned ninth place in the 600 yard run (1:31.84).

For the Highland men they were led by a pair of fourth place finishes and pair of fifth place finishes at the Bill Easton Classic event.

Freshman, Steven Hill leapt his way to a fourth place in the long jump with a leap of 6.81m, while the Scotties Distance Medley earned fourth, also behind a time of 11:31.29. The quartet of Carlos Gonzale-Tabares, for Hiawatha Red Hawk, Kooper Winterscheidt, Clayton Stoppkotte and Rey Quinones-Velez took home the Medley fourth place finish.

All four guys in the relay competed in other events on the day; for Winterscheidt he finished 13th in the 400 meter dash (55.88), while Quinones-Velez took home sixth in the 1000 meter run (2:45.92), Stoppkotte notched a 10th place in the 600 yard run (1:21.19) and Gonzalez-Tabares finished 10th in the One Mile Run (4:54.92).

Scotties fifth place finishes on the day came at the hands of former Horton Charger, Jacob Lott in the shot put with a toss of 14.27m and by Tyus Jacob in the 400 meter dash with a time of 50.69. Tyus Jacob was also a part of the Scotties 4x400m Relay team that placed sixth on the day with a time of 3:31.83, along with his teammates of Trevon Constant and former Jackson Heights Cobra, Eric Mellenbruch and former Oskaloosa Bear, Dalton Ricketts.

Constant and Ricketts each notched other performances on the day as Constant took 12th in the 400m Dash (54.73) and Ricketts placed 15th in the 60m Dash (7.17).

Another top performance for Highland on the day was Brian Martinez who took home seventh place in the 3000 meter run with a time of 9:19.31, while his teammates former Hiawatha Red Hawk, Chris Babel and Jonathan Oliva took home 17th and 20th places, respectively with times of 9:58.17 and 10:17.89.

Chris’ brother Nic Babel placed 14th in the One Mile run with a time of 5:04.07, while Adrain Sias took home 16th place in the same event (5:18.10). Other Scotties that competed on the day included 13th in the 60m Dash (7.15) by Deante Ambler, 10th place in the long jump(5.56m) by Caleb Johnson and 14th place in the shot put (9.59m) by Cody Catterson.

Benedictine College had a pair of ladies compete on Saturday and both earned top 10 finishes in their competitions as Katherine Dillard took home fourth in the One Mile Run (5:10.39) and Cassie Wagner placed eighth in the high jump (1.56m).

The Indoor track season started off strong for many competitors from the listening earn for area colleges and former area high school athletes competing at the college level.
