After another great year of football in the Northeast Kansas area, six of the top flight seniors in the listening area will strap up representing their high school one final time as they were selected to the 2014 Kansas Shrine Bowl Football game on July 26th at Carney Smith Stadium at Pittsburg State University at 7:00pm.

This year’s East squad that was highlighted last year by top flight performances from area athletes will feature: Dustin Rottinghaus of Baileyville-B&B, JT Rosine of Centralia, Peyton Newell of Hiawatha, Jake Riederer of Holton, Nick McAferty of McLouth and Justin Scott of Jeff West. The East will also be led by a local area coach in McLouth Bulldog Head Coach, Chris Stewart.

B&B Falcon Dustin Rottinghaus helped the Falcons go out on top in the final year of the school as the team went 13-1 and won the 8-Man Division II State title, repeating as champions. Rottinghaus lead the Falcons high flying offense at quarterback passing for 2,666 yards, 46 touchdowns and only six interceptions in his senior year, while rushing for over 380 yards and 14 touchdowns, too. Dustin also added 53 tackles on defense with three interceptions and seven pass defenses on the year at safety/linebacker on defense.

Centralia Panther, JT Rosine led a potent rushing attack out of the patent single-wing formation helping the Panthers to a 13-0 mark on the season and a Class 2-1A State Championship. The senior quarterback posted over 500 yards passing with six TD, while rushing for over 1,100 yards and 17 touchdowns. Rosine also made an impact on the defensive side of the ball at safety for the Panthers as Centralia only allowed 5.2 ppg and 113.4 ypg to their opponents.

Hiawatha Red Hawk, Peyton Newell continued to cause havoc in opponent’s backfields at his defensive end spot all year as he posted 76 tackles, 32 for loss and 12 sacks on the season for the Red Hawks. Newell helped the Red Hawks return to the playoffs and win a playoff game for the second straight year finishing the season 7-4. Newell one of the highest ranked players across the state has already committed to play football at the University of Nebraska next year.

Holton Wildcat, Jake Riederer helped the Holton Wildcats to another stellar season on the football field this year finishing 12-1 and falling one game shy of a return trip to the Class 4A state championship. Riederer anchored a Wildcat offensive line that posted 380.5 rushing ypg throughout the year and put up 36.3 ppg. Riederer also registered 30 tackles and a pair of fumble recoveries on the defensive side of the ball for the Wildcats.

McLouth Bulldog, Nick McAferty proved to be quite the playmaker for the Bulldogs throughout the season helping lead them back to the 2-1A playoffs again and 7-3 season under Head Coach Chris Stewart who McAferty will play for one final time in the Shrine Bowl. Nick earned first team offense and second defense in the Northeast Kansas League this year, while earning All-Class honors on offense.

Jeff West Tiger, Justin Scott was a staple for the Tigers in the trenches all season and was a great player upfront on both offensive and defensive earning first-team All-Big Seven League on both sides of the ball. Tigers made the playoffs for the second straight year and finished 7-3 after falling to KC Piper in the first round of the 4A playoffs in a close 28-24 battle.

Last year’s Shrine Bowl was highlighted by a quartet of area football seniors, this year six area seniors will take to the field to help the East squad win the 41st annual Kansas Shrine Bowl in Pittsburg, Kansas at Carney Smith Stadium on July 26th.
