GIRLS = Holton 46, Jeff West 24
BOYS = Holton 50, Jeff West 46
After having their 114 consecutive game Big 7 League win streak snapped on Friday in a home loss to Santa Fe Trail (42-15), the Holton girls got back to their winning ways with an impressive road win at Jeff West on Tuesday. The Wildcats took a 5-4 lead and never looked back, up 21-9 at halftime and stretching the margin to 20 in the final quarter. Kyrstie Miller hit a pair of treys and finished with a game high 17 points while Hayley Thompson played great off the bench registering a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds plus 2 assists and a steal. Holton only had 11 turnovers in the game, improving to 3-1 in league play and getting their record back even 3-3. Olivia Brees scored 9 to lead the Lady Tigers but was just 1 of 7 from the foul line and Jeff West made only 7 of 20 charity tosses while committing 21 turnovers before falling to 2-4 overall and 1-3 in the Big 7.
The boys game was back and forth and tight throughout. The first six shots the Holton boys made were all behind the arc and 21 of their 25 first half points came on three-pointers. Yet, it was a desperation trey by Conner Mickens of Jeff West that beat the buzzer and put the Tigers ahead 26-25 at halftime. The game was tied at 37 entering the final quarter and Holton made 7 of 10 free throws in the final period to hold on for the win. Jeff West was only 3 of 8 at the charity stripe in the final stanza and had four more turnovers than the Wildcats (12). Contrary to Holton's three-point-barrage, Jeff West used a huge size advantage to control the inside and got 18 points from Jacob Dickey and 10 by Alex Miller to lead the way. The Tigers (2-4) have lost all four of their games by seven points or less and led in the second half of each contests. Garrett Beecher led the Cats with 19 points and was 8-10 at the line with three trifecata's to earn "Player to Bank On" honors from the Citizens State Bank and Trust Company in Hiawatha. Trey Tanking added 14. Holton, ranked #3 in the state, is now 6-0 on the season and will face the other league undefeated team, Sabetha, on Friday night.
