With winter break in the rear view and the page turned on a new calendar year the latest Kansas Basketball Coaches Association rankings have been released and 17 area teams find themselves in the rankings with movement for the last rankings before the holiday.

Starting in Class 4A the Holton Wildcat boys picked up where they left off in the first half of the season last Friday by beating Santa Fe Trail at home (66-30) to remain unbeaten on the season at 5-0 and continue to be ranked third in Class 4A-Division II. The Lady Wildcats of Holton despite seeing their Big Seven winning streak of 114 straight games snapped by Santa Fe Trail remain in the latest rankings at number seven with a 2-3 record thus far this season.

The Lady Chargers of Santa Fe Trail who trashed Holton 42-15 remain steadfast at number one in Class 4A-Division II as they are a perfect 5-0 on the year.

Like 4A-Division II, Class 3A has three teams ranked from the area between the boys and girls rankings. On the boys side fresh off a 56-43 win over rival Nemaha Valley, the Sabetha Bluejay boys are 5-0 and jump into the 3A rankings at number seven this week, while the Raiders of Nemaha Valley fell to number nine after suffering their first loss, making them 5-1.

On the girls side the Lady Bulldogs of Marysville rolled into the holiday break a perfect 5-0, beating Chapman 62-48 in their last game before the break. Marysville moved up one spot to number five in the last KBCA 3A polls.

In Class 2A the Lady Chargers of Jefferson County North and Lady Tigers of Washington County both remain unbeaten and ranked checking in at number two and six, each moving up in the polls. The Chargers are off to a 5-0 start and fresh off a dominating 80-29 win over Wellsville this past Friday, while the Tigers are 7-0 and beat Wetmore 62-31 in their last game right before the break.

On the boys side the Troy Trojans off to a 5-1 start this season have jumped into the rankings at number 10 this week, as they eked out a 59-58 win over Blue Valley-Randolph before the break.

Class 1A-Division I continue to be the class with the most area teams ranked with five, two on the girl’s side and three in the boy’s poll. In the girls polls the Valley Heights Lady Mustangs headline the area teams as they are a perfect 5-0 on the season with a win over Doniphan West before the break and that 5-0 start as the Mustangs up one spot to number two in the latest KBCA poll. The Linn Lady Bulldogs area off to a 4-1 start this season and moved up to number seven this week, up one spot as they went into the break with a 41-32 win over Centralia.

The boy’s poll continues to have Valley Heights and Centralia ranked second and third in the polls, respectively. The Mustangs are off to a 5-0 start this season and closed out the first portion of the season by grabbing a four-point win over Doniphan West before the break, while Centralia moved to 3-2 on the season behind a 60-47 win at home over Wetmore last Friday. The Hanover Wildcats is the other area boys team ranked as they remained at number ten this week after picking up a big 58-50 win over B&B last Friday to improve to 5-2 on the season.

In Class 1A-Division II the B&B Falcon boys and girls both remain ranked, along with the Axtell boys. For the B&B Falcon boys they suffered a tough road loss to Hanover last Friday to move to 4-1 on the season and fell two spots in the poll to number five. While the Lady Falcons moved up one spot to number two after holding on for a 42-36 road win over Hanover to move to 4-1 on the season. The Axtell boys moved down one spot to number nine this week after going 3-4 to start the season but went into the break with a 36-31 win over Clifton-Clyde.

The second half of the season has just gotten underway and while the temperatures are frigid outside the basketball action is about to heat up across Kansas and many area teams look to make noise on their way to setting themselves up for a run late in the season.
