Top 5 Kanzaland Sports Moments Countdowns

The year of 2013 has been one to remember for the Kanzaland area with teams from the KNZA/KMZA/KAIR radio listening area performing well in a multitude of sports from the high school level to college and professional and there have been plenty of National sports stories, too.  Sports Directors for KNZA, KMZA and KAIR radio in Justin Fluke, Mike Smith and Pat Strathman each ranked Top 5 moments in many categories taking a look back at the 2013 sports year (all the lists are below).

Top 5 Categories include – Games Broadcasted, High school football, High school basketball, High School Sports (non-basketball & football), Overall High School sports moments, Regional Sports, National Sports, Highland CC Sports and Benedictine College Sports.

Top 5 Games Broadcasted in 2013 (Mike):

                1.       Boys Basketball: Axtell beat B&B 58-53 in Overtime in sub-state final

                2.       Football: B&B defeats Hanover on the road 34-22 in final regular season showdown

                3.       Football: B&B claims 8-Man DII State in Final game in school history with 42-19 win over
                  Wallace County

                4.       Volleyball: State Volleyball competition at Hays for Centralia & B&B (both won State
                  championships)

                5.       Boys Basketball: Axtell beat Centralia 41-38 on buzzer-beating three-pointer in TVL
                  Tournament semifinals (Axtell went on to win tourney for first time in school history)

   Boys Basketball: Axtell wins 1A-DII State title with 65-56 win over Fowler
   Boys Basketball: Nemaha Valley defeats Santa Fe Trail on the road 52-47
   Boys Basketball: Onaga beat Axtell 56-53 on Road in Overtime Thriller
   Football: Centralia Dominates LaCrosse 61-0 to Win 2-1A Stat Title

1.       FB: Maur Hill Mount Academy vs. Oskaloosa, Bears score 22 unanswered pts in 4th to win 30-26

2.       VB: Jefferson County North’s state tournament (Finished 2nd place in Class 2A)

3.       FB: Nemaha Valley vs. Rossville (Second round of the Class 3A playoffs)

4.       VB: Nemaha Valley upsets Jayhawk-Linn in 3A state tournament (Pool play match in 3A State tourney)

Top 5 Games You Broadcasted in 2013 (Justin):

1.       Football - #1 Holton rallies past #2 Andale (24-14) advancing to Sub-State and extending the state’s longest football winning streak to 26.

2.       Legion Baseball – At State AA Tourney in Pratt, Sabetha improved to 2-0 with a 10-9 walk-off win against Ellis.  The game featured 6 lead changes and advanced Sabeata the winners bracket finals.

3.       Basketball – Sabetha girls tough 48-46 loss to eventual state champ Burlington at 3A Tourney in Hutchinson. Lady Jays first state hoop appearance since 2004 but a fifth-straight 15+ win season.

4.       Football - Troy rebounds from a pair of 2-7 campaigns as Derek Jasper takes over as Coach and leads the Trojans to a 26-14 road win at McLouth for their first post-season win since 2008.

5.       Football - Hiawatha beats Riley County (25-8) in rain for a consecutive year playoff victory

1.       Holton wins state 4A Wrestling team title for first time as Hunter Price takes individual title along with Justin Scott of Jeff West plus 22 other local state wrestling medalists.  

2.       Sabetha wins 3A Boys State Golf for first time in school history after placing third and second the two prior seasons at state.

3.       More local league changes including the farewell to the Delaware Valley and play begins in the new Northeast Kansas League.   

4.       The continued restructure of KSHSAA classifications.  Mainly, the split of Class 4A into Division I and II. 

5.       Creation of “The Holton Channel” on MSC Sports for broadcasting audio and video of Holton Wildcat varsity athletics.  Surpassed 1,400 viewers in a single playoff game and 5,000 total viewers in first 3 months.
