Seven and a half miles of road separate McLouth and Oskaloosa high schools. When teams are that close, it’s bound to be a rivalry and the energy on Friday matched that as both girls and boys teams looked for its first victory in the Northeast Kansas League.

In girls competition, Oskaloosa held the edge after the first half, 21-15. Both teams traded buckets in the third, but McLouth crept closer to only trail by one, 28-27 heading into the fourth quarter. The Lady Bulldogs dug deep and scored 17 points to defeat the Lady Bears 44-39.

Senior Kayla Steffey paced the Lady Bulldogs, scoring 20 points and was the Bank of Atchison Player of the Game. Junior Angela Dailey helped by recording 10 points. Oskaloosa had two players in double figures. Sophomore Maddy Miller led the team in scoring for the second straight game as she put up 13 points. Sophomore Haidyn Bassett returned after being sidelined with an injury and scored 11 points off the bench.

McLouth improved to 1-2 (1-1) and picked up its first league victory while Oskaloosa fell to 0-5 (0-1).

Run and score was the theme in the boys game. McLouth didn’t hesitate to fire up shots and the Bulldogs ended the first quarter up 14-5. Oskaloosa bounced back nicely and scored 20 points in the second, but McLouth recorded 22 to put the Bulldogs ahead 36-25 at the break. The Bears cut into the deficit in the third quarter and battled in the fourth, but the Bulldogs held on to win 69-64.

Leading the charge for McLouth was senior Dylan Dover. He was one of four starters to end in double figures and Dover finished with 13. Senor Nick “Buck” McAferty and junior Drew Cerny chipped in 12 points and junior Jack Courtney recorded 11.

Senior Colby Harris’s sensational performance didn’t give the Bears the victory, but shouldn’t go unnoticed. Harris returned to the starting lineup after battling sickness and dropped 28 points and drained six threes to be our Bank of Atchison Player of the Game. Junior Luis Rodriguez was in double figures with 10 points.

McLouth went to 1-2 (1-1) and goes on the road to Lawrence to take on Bishop Seabury. Oskaloosa fell to 0-5 (0-1) and battles Horton after the holiday break.
