Boys - Doniphan West 53, Riverside 42

An early 9-0 run for the Doniphan West girls in the first quarter gave the home team a lead they would never surrender on Thursday night in Highland, KS.  The Lady Mustangs built a double-digit advantage (19-8) by halftime and pulled away for the 20 point win to start the season and Northeast Kansas Round Robin Shootout.  Abbi Ellis and Payton Leach each hit a pair of treys to score 10 and 9 points respectively, while Scotti Twombly and McKenzie Blevins each added 6.  Regan Gibson was the story of the night and "Player to Bank On" honoree sponsored by Citizens State Bank and Trust Company of Hiawatha as she registered 10 points plus 12 rebounds and 4 blocks as well as a couple steals and assists. D-West also hit 15 of 21 free throws to improve to 1-0 on the season as they make the move to the Twin Valley League and drop to the Class 1A Ranks this season.  Riverside was plagued by foul-trouble throughout the game and struggled offensively as Mackenzie Brewer had a team high 6 points in the loss.  The Lady Cyclones drop to 0-1 as they transition into the Big 7 League this season.

The Doniphan West boys basketball team hadn't won a game since February 10th, 2012 and finished 0-21 last season with a 26 game losing streak coming into 2013-14.  Yet, with David Johnson back as coach and despite only three upper-classmen on the entire HS roster of 14, the Mustangs found a win to beat Riverside with 11 points the largest margin of the night.  The Mustangs hit a trio of three-pointers in the second quarter to stretch the lead to 25-17 at halftime.  Riverside rallied to take their only lead of the night at 30-28 with 4:30 left in the quarter, but D-West scored the next 8 points to lead 36-30 heading into the fourth quarter.  The Mustangs hit 16 of 19 free throws in the contest to help stretch the lead late in the game and also nailed 7 shots behind the arc.  Cooper Leach was the Citizens State Bank and Trust Company "Player to Bank On" as the sophomore made 9 of 12 at the line and scored 11 of his 19 points in the final quarter.  Fellow sophomore, Austin Taylor added 11 points, while Jeffrey Watts and Lane Spiker each chipped in 6 points and Wade Joyce tallied 8 points all in the second quarter.  Riverside, coming off a 12-9 season with four returning starters, struggled all night from the field, only making one three-pointer in the closing minutes.  Andrae McGaughy led the Cyclones with 15 points while Pheonix Keller had 10 off the bench, including 8 of 10 free throws.
