Onaga Girls and Washington County Boys Take TVL Cross Country Titles

Teams took to the course for one final regular season cross country race on Thursday and it was league meet time and in the Twin Valley League, Centralia played host to the meet.

On the girls side it was the youth in the TVL shining bright with seven of the top 10 finishers being freshman or sophomores, while on the boys side six of the of the top 10 finishers were upper classmen in juniors or seniors.

In the girls competition the Onaga Lady Buffalos ran their way to a first place team finish posting 28 points as a pair of freshman lead the charge posting first and second place finishes. Maggie Revell took home first place with a time of 17:05, 35 seconds better than her teammate Alexis VanDonge who took second with a time of 17:40.

The Axtell Eagle girls took home second place as a team with 34 total points and were led by a trio of top 10 finishes on the day as junior, Susan Peschel took fifth place (18:12), her teammate senior, Tricia Schmitz followed her in sixth place (18:31) and freshman, Paige Menninga finished tenth (19:26).

Washington County raced their way to third place as a team in the girls competition and also, registered multiple top 10 finishers on the day as junior, Madison Stone notched a seventh place finish (18:47) and sophomore, Paulina Koester ran to a ninth place finish (19:18).

The host Centralia Panthers, too finished with multiple top 10 finishers at the TVL meet as they were led by freshman, Sadie Jones who posted a time of 18:02 to take home third place, while her freshman teammate, Madison Boeckman placed eighth behind a time of 18:56.

Clifton-Clyde Eagles sophomore, Abby Sikes took home the lone other top 10 finish in the girls competition as she raced her way to a time of 18:12 to place fourth on the day.

On the boys side of competition it was the Washington County Tigers leading the way taking home a first place finish with 31 points, while Wetmore finished second with 41 points and Axtell rounded out the top three finishing with 51 points for third place.

The Tigers of Washington County were led by junior, Dylan Hodgson who continued his strong season by winning the TVL league title with a time of 16:08, 15 seconds better than second place. Hodgson's freshman teammate, Eric Miller joined him in the top 10 taking home seventh place with a time of 18:13.

For the Wetmore Cardinals they registered the most top 10 finishers on the day in the boy’s competition was three guys race their way into the top 10, to help the team to a second place team performance. Senior, Josh Ballenger lead the charge for the Cardinals finishing fifth after posting a time of 17:48. Freshman, Aaron Acthen and junior, Jeremy Hoelscher joined Ballenger in the top 10 placing eighth and tenth, respectively with times of 18:20 and 18:37.

Third place team on the day the Axtell Eagles were led by a third place finish by Tracey Schmitz who posted a time of 17:22, while his teammate Shane Torrey took home a sixth place finish with a time of 18:06.

Frankfort, Valley Heights and Onaga all also took home a top 10 finisher at the TVL league meet on Thursday. The Wildcats were led by senior, Adam Koch who took home second place behind a time of 16:33, while Valley Heights Mustangs saw freshman, Adrain Pishny finished fourth posting a time of 17:33. For the Onaga Buffalos it was sophomore, Michael Eisenbarth leading the way as he finished ninth with a time of 18:25.

With the league meet in the books area cross country teams now turn their attention to Regionals on Saturday October 26th with TVL teams set to compete in Class 2A and Class 1A Regional competition.
