Hiawatha Sweeps Big Seven Cross Country Crowns While Other Teams Have Top Performances

It's the final cross country meet of the regular season and perhaps the one with the most bragging rights attached outside of State and Regionals as it’s for the league title.

All the Big Seven League teams converge in Hoyt on Thursday as Royal Valley hosted the meet this year and competed for the right to be called the Big Seven League champs.

At the end of the day that honor of claiming the Big Seven League title went to the Hiawatha Red Hawks in a clean sweep taking home both the girls and boys team titles and individual league titles, also.

In the girl's competition the Red Hawks posted 52 points to win the league title their top five finishers who all finished 16th or better on the day. The ACCHS Tigers followed Hiawatha with 67 points to take home second place team performance and Sabetha just behind then with 70 points came in third as a team.

Leading the charge for the Red Hawks was the junior, Jordan Puvogel who beat out her competition by nearly 48 seconds posting a time of 16:01.27 to take home first place in the girl’s race. Her teammate, Molly Kettler continued her strong showing this season with another top 10 finish notching seventh place (17:12.89). Kailey Davis, MaKenna Gilpin and Mykah Barnes took home 13th, 15th and 16th place finishes respectively.

The Tigers of ACCHS took home second as a team as they were led by a pair of top 10 finishers on the day. Madison Bissell lead the Tigers charge with a sixth place performance posting a time of 17:08.93, while her teammate Beba Scholz raced her way to tenth place with a time of 17:28.97. The Tigers didn't stop there with top performances as Tiffany Gillmore, Maddison Forbes and MacKenzie Forbes took home top 20 finishes, finishing 14th, 18th and 19th, respectively.

For the third place team on the day the Sabetha Bluejays, too saw a pair of top 10 finishers as Miranda Huettner continued to better herself notching a fourth place finish with a time of 16:58.34, while senior, Brianna Gruber took home eighth place with a time of 17:13.32. Taryn Schuette returned for the Bluejays after being injuried and notched an 11th place finish, also for the Bluejays.

Santa Fe Trail and Perry Lecompton where the lone two other schools to have girls finish in the top 10 at the League meet. For the Chargers it was three top 10 finishers on the day lead by Devin DeShazer who placed second with a time of 16:49.08, while her teammate Jennifer Hall took third (16:54.62). Skye Dunnaway notched the other top 10 finish for the Chargers, placing ninth with a time of 17:20.94.

In the boys competition the Hiawatha Red Hawks posted 37 points to capture first place as a team, with Sabetha taking home second with 54 points and Santa Fe Trail finishing third with 90 points.

The Red Hawks were led by four top 10 finishers on the day and seven runners in the top 20. Sophomore, Brandt Houk led the charge notching another first place finish this year after posting a time of 17:34.66. Senior, Tyler Boeckman joined him in the top five, grabbing a fifth place finish on the day (18:15.91), while Jesse Quinn and Conner Winters finished eighth (18:28.76) and ninth (18:29.67) for the Redhawks. Other top 20 finishers for Hiawatha include dual-sport athlete, Brendan Steele who took home 14th, Gavin Lierz who placed 17th and Beau Oldridge who notched a 18th place finish.

For the Sabetha Bluejays it was Keegan Cox and Corbin Cox leading the way placing third and fourth on the day behind times of 17:55.09 and 18:09.11. Fellow Bluejays, Kellen Russell and Mitchell Lierz took home top 20 finishes placing just outside the top 10 at 11th and 12th place.

The Chargers of Santa Fe Trail also took home a pair of top 10 individual finishes as Derrick Zaldivar posted a time of 17:39.19 to finish second and Kyle Wechsler placed 10th with a time of 18:34.79.

Holton and Nemaha Valley took home the other two top 10 finishes at the League meet with a pair of guys taking sixth and seventh. For Holton it was Dalton Colhouer again resgistering a top 10 finish on the year placing sixth with a time of 18:20.42, while Nemaha Valley Raider, Colin Lierz finished seventh behind a time of 18:26.05.

It was great performances all around by all the Big Seven League teams at the League meet but now teams put that in the rear view mirror and gear up for Regionals on Saturday October 26th and try and race their way to a State meet appearance.
