Four Sabetha Bluejays Tennis Players Qualify for State

Fall sports have started to hit postseason time and the first sport to see area athletes qualify for State tournament action is girl’s tennis.

Four Sabetha Bluejays while be headed to Class 3-2-1A State tournament on October 18th-19th in Pratt, after their top six finishes at the Class 3-2-1A Regionals in Leavenworth this past weekend.

Leading the charge for the Bluejays was the senior doubles tandem of Amy Wysong and Ellie Montgomery who continued their strong season and went into the Regional as the one number one seed and finished the day 4-0 to win Regionals and improve to 27-3 on the year. Wysong and Montgomery breezed past their opening round opponents 6-0, 6-0 for the win continued their dominant performance with a 6-3, 6-0 win the next round. Then it was a Marysville team as the opponent in the semifinals and finals for Wysong and Montgomery. In the semifinals the win didn't come easy but Amy and Ellie notched the win 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the championship match that would go down to the last few points with the 7-5, 7-6 tiebreaker 7-2 win going to Amy and Ellie. The senior tandem is looking to cap of a steller tennis career at Sabetha with a great run in the State tournament and improve upon their sixth place performance last year.

The singles competition is where the Bluejays will be sending two more to the State competition with top six performances by Lexi Wenger and Alexa Menold qualifying them for State. Lexi finished the day 2-2, opening the day with back-to-back wins (6-0, 6-0 in the opening round and second round, also), ushering herself a spot in the State tournament with those wins Wenger lost a pair of tough matches to finish the day with a fourth place finish. Lexi will head into the State tournament with a 20-12 record on the year.

For Menold, she too finished the day with a 2-2 record, spreading her wins and losses out on the day. Alexa opened the day with a 6-1, 6-0 win but then fell in her next match meaning she would need a win in her third match of the day to assuring a top six finish and qualify for state. That Menold would get with a 6-2, 6-1 win to move into the fifth place match which she loss in a tough competition giving her a sixth place finish. Alexa heads into the State tournament with a 14-17 record on the season.

The Bluejays on the day finished with a total of 14 points, one shy of a first place performance at Regionals, finishing just behind Marysville, who had five girls qualify for State.

The Bulldogs saw doubles teams of Jenae Harmer and Lauren Hawkinson, along with Hilary Ronnebaum and Madison Nieberding both qualify for State finishing second and third. While Rachel Frese posted a fifth place finish in singles competition to, also qualify for State.

With Regionals in the books attention now turns to the State competition in Pratt at Walter Blake Tennis Complex on October 18th-19th for the area competitors qualifying, as they look to cap off great years on the tennis court.
