Hiawatha Leads Area Performances at Sabetha CC Invite with Many Teams Seeing Top 20 Finishers

It was the second meet of the week for many area teams and they faced off against some tough 4A out of the area schools, as Baldwin and Clay Center grab top spots all around in the day, but area teams and individuals had their fair share of top performances.

Eight area teams finished the day with at least one boys or girls competitor capturing a top 20 finish on the day.

Leading the way for area performances were the Hiawatha Red Hawks as junior, Jordan Puvogel returned to form after taking second place earlier this week she raced to a 19 second win at the Sabetha Invite posting a time of 16:28.00. Her performance along with an 11th place from Molly Kettler (17:32.00) speared headed the Red Hawk girls squad to a third place team performance.

ACCHS girls took home fourth as a team being led by Madison Bissell who took home 19th place (17:57.00) as the only Tigers top 20 finisher. The fifth place team on the day was the host Sabetha Bluejays who say Miranda Huettner and Brianna Gruber as their only top 20 finishers with Huettner taking 12th (17:32.00) and Gruber placing 14th (17:36.00).

Marysville and Jackson Heights were the only two other girls teams to see a runner notched a top 20 finish. For the Bulldogs of Marysville they had the second best area individual performance as Bryclin Alstrom took home a ninth place finish racing to a time of 17:17.00. The Cobras saw Kaitlynn Little lead the way again placing 13th with a time of 17:35.00.

On the boys side it was Hiawatha again leading the way for the top area performances as the boys tallied a third place team performance, led by the best area performance by an area runner with Brandt Houk posting a time of 17:06.00 to take home sixth place. His teammate, Jesse Quinn was the only other Red Hawk to finish in the top 20 as Jesse registered a 17th place finish (18:05.00).

The Bluejays of Sabetha took home fourth place as a team in the boy’s competition, being paced by a pair of top 20 finishes. Keegan Cox lead the way with a seventh place finish (17:07.00) as he finished just slightly behind Houk of Hiawatha; Mitchell Lierz grabbed the other top 20 finish for Sabetha taking home 16th (18:04.00).

Wetmore Cardinals tallied a fifth place team finish in the boys competition as Josh Ballenger lead the way placing in the top 10 with a tenth place finish, posting a time 17:34.00. His teammate, Jeremy Hoelscher notched an 18th place for the Cardinals with a time of 18:07.00, while Aaron Achten finished just outside the top 20, taking 21st.

Holton was the only other area boys squad to grab a top 20 finish in the boys competition as Dalton Colhouer took home a 12th place finish with a time of 17:57.00.

All the area teams in competition on Thursday (October 10th) now turn their attention to wrapping up the regular season with their respective league meets coming up next Thursday (October 17th).
