After racking up 148 rushing yards last week, Jayhawk-Linn junior quarterback Tommy Avery continued to use his legs, this time in a 36-17 victory over Jefferson County North.

In the first quarter, both offenses couldn’t find the endzone. The only points placed on the board came from the Chargers defense after a fumble into the endzone by the Jayhawks led to a safety, giving JCN a 2-0 lead after one.

The offensive dry spell ended in the second after a 10-play, 70-yard drive by Jayhawk-Linn, capped off by a 17-yard touchdown run by Avery. Two-point conversion wasn’t completed, leaving the score at 6-2 with 8:13 to play in the first half.

Jefferson County North didn’t waste much time to respond. Twenty seconds later, senior tailback Jimi Pisachubbe traveled 80 yards to the endzone to give the Chargers a 9-6 lead. After a huge kickoff return, Avery found the goalline once more, this time from 28 yards out and Jayhawk-Linn retook the lead, up 12-9 with 7:02 left in the second quarter.

With 2:34 left in the half, Tommy Avery picked up his third rushing touchdown on the night with a seven-yard run to extend the lead to nine, Jayhawks up 18-9. Just like the first time, Jefferson County North only needed one play to respond. Sophomore quarterback Bryce Noll connected with senior tightend Luke Pyle on a 63-yard touchdown. Two-point conversion was good and the Chargers trailed 18-17 with 2:15 left.

Special teams continued to help Jayhawk-Linn and set up the offense perfectly for another touchdown drive. This time, freshman halfback Cole McGrew found the endzone to give the Jayhawks a 24-17 lead heading into halftime.

In the second half, Jayhawk-Linn controlled the tempo and scored two more touchdowns by Tommy Avery in the fourth quarter.

The Bank of Atchison Player of the Game went to Tommy Avery after a stellar five-touchdown performance. He also recorded 197 yards rushing and intercepted a JCN pass. Senior runningback Levi Jackson carried the ball 17 times for 110 yards and Cole McGrew recorded 31 yards and one touchdown.

For Jefferson County North, Jimi Pisachubbe’s legs were effective, recording 124 yards and one touchdown on seven carries. Luke Pyle racked up 78 yards and a touchdown on three catches. Quarterback Brynce Noll threw for 90 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions while rushing for 25 yards.

Jayhawk-Linn earned back-to-back victories to bring its record to 2-2. Jefferson County North fell to 0-4 on the season and begin district play next week at Immaculata (0-4).
