Six Area Cross Country Squads Ranked in Second Cross Country Poll of the Season

With at least a pair of meets under the belts of many cross country teams across the state of Kansas the action is starting to heat and the second Kansas Cross Country Coaches poll has been released with six area teams finding themselves ranked in their respective classifications.

In Class 1A both the Axtell girls and boys remained ranked in the latest polls as the girls check in at number four in the top seven rankings, while the boys are ranked seventh. The girls are coming off a fourth place team performance at the Nemaha Valley Invite in their latest competition. Senior, Tricia Schmitz lead the way placing fifth in the competition while her teammate Susan Peschal took home a top 10 finish also, notching eighth place. For the Eagle boys, senior, Tracy Schmitz paced the way at the Nemaha Valley Invite taking home third place at the Nemaha Valley Invite.

Frankfort Wildcats, highlighted the Class 1A rankings also as the Wildcat boys checked in at number three in the rankings placing 11th at the Wamego Invite as a team against tough competition and being led by fifth place finisher senior, Adam Koch.

Class 2A, the lady Chargers of Jefferson County North continued to be ranked after placing third as a team in the Holton Invitational and being paced by three top 20 finishers in that competition. Sophomore, Carissa McAfee led the charge for the Chargers notching a fifth place finish, while Laramie Leakey and Julie Schrick took home 12th and 13th place finishes.

The Charger boys didn't make it into the rankings this time but are receiving some votes in the latest polls.

In Class 3A, the girl’s side as a pair of teams in the top seven as Pleasant Ridge and Sabetha both remained in the rankings after taking third and fourth place as teams, respectively at the Wamego Invitational recently. The Rams were led by junior, Kristina Silvers who took home seventh place, while Rachel Hattok and Hailey Worthington took home 18th and 20th place finishes.

For the lady Bluejays they were led by sophomore, Taryn Schuette who took home a ninth place finish at the Wamego Invite, while her teammates Miranda Huettner and Brianna Gruber registered 16th and 20th place finishes.

The Bluejays boys squad fell out of the rankings but were just on the outside looking in receiving votes to be consider for the poll.

While only six area cross country teams are in the latest rankings, the Northeast Kansas area continues to tout some of the best runners and teams throughout the state, as the season action heats up over the next few weeks.
