The Friday night lights were finally on across the sunflower state. To the Oskaloosa Bears, it seemed like the bright lights were too intimidating.

“The team was scared,” said Oskaloosa coach Scott Whaley.

The young Bears squad went into the half trailing Maur Hill Mount Academy 20-8. After two fumbles in the third quarter, the Bears dug themselves in a bigger hole down 26-8 heading into the final quarter.

That’s when something finally clicked in the team’s head to not be afraid to shine under the lights.

After battling back to only trail 26-22, the Bears stared at fourth and goal at Maur Hill Mount Academy’s four yard line with 11 seconds left. A quick pitch to junior runningback Luis Rodriguez to the far side of the field and the Bears completed the comeback, scoring 22 unanswered points to win 30-26.

Maur Hill Mount Academy struck first off a one yard touchdown run by sophomore Harry Trotter to lead 6-0. After Oskaloosa’s second consecutive punt, junior quarterback Josh Caudle threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to senior wideout Brian Scott to lead 12-0 after one quarter of play.

On the Bears fourth offensive possession, Oskaloosa took time off the clock with a 13-play, 80-yard drive capped off with a one-yard score by senior runningback Bryce Stottlemire. After a huge kickoff return by Brian Scott to put the Ravens in prime field position, the Ravens used four plays to travel 26 yards to score again by Harry Trotter for his second score of the game to head to the locker room up 20-8.

The third quarter was plagued by turnovers for both teams. Oskaloosa fumbled the ball twice and Maur Hill Mount Academy threw an interception. The Ravens were the only one to score off a turnover. Josh Caudle found senior wideout Mark McDermed for a 33-yard strike to put the Ravens up 26-8.

To start the fourth quarter, the Bears get a huge 35-yard touchdown run by runningback Justin Sharp to start the comeback for Oskloosa. The Ravens coughed up the ball at their own 47-yard line and Luis Rodriguez gets his first touchdown of the day off a 47-yard rush to bring the game to 26-22.

The Bank of Atchison player of the game was Luis Rodriguez who finished with 116 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries. Bryce Stottlemire recorded 67 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries while Justin Sharp gets 61 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries.

For Maur Hill Mount Academy, Josh Caudle went 8-15 with 88 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. He also rushed for 30 yards. Austin Geenens finished with 94 yards on 11 carries and Harry Trotter had two touchdowns and 32 yards on nine carries.
