Riding high from their win over fellow KJCCC league opponent, Fort Scott in week one the Highland Scotties football team turned their sights to their home opener as they were set to host the #14 ranked team in junior college, Northeastern Oklahoma.

Northeastern Oklahoma established dominance early getting to the Scotties by scoring 27 points just in the first quarter before the Scotties managed to get on the board, giving Highland a deep hole they were unable to dig themselves out of falling 47-14 in the contest.

Down 27-0 early, the Scotties managed to final get on the board in the first quarter with a one-yard touchdown run by freshman runningback, Justin Ward (Olathe, KS), making it 27-7.

Northeastern Oklahoma added another touchdown in the second quarter (PAT missed) and another in the third quarter to stretch their lead to 40-7, before the Scotties could final score again. Highland put up their final points of the game in the fourth quarter with freshman runningback, Elbert Johnson (Olathe, KS) punching it in for another one-yard touchdown for the Scotties making it 40-14, but Northeastern Oklahoma tallied one more score to cap of the game.

Scotties offense struggled running the ball amassing only 16 yards on the ground of their total 357 offensive yards, while Northeastern Oklahoma compiled 532 total yards of offense. While the struggle of running the ball stalled the Scotties offense it was also seven sacks given up and three turnovers, one of which was returned for touchdown that doomed them in the contest.

Highland quarterback, Brandon Bergeron (Lafayette, LA) was 31-52 for 341 yards, with Austin Moses (Overland Park, KS) catching 10 passes for 145 yards and Dustin Lara (Sabetha, KS) catching six passes for 36 yards.

While the Highland defense gave up 40 points (other seven points scored on INT return for Northeastern Oklahoma) they did have some solid performances. Mike Brown (Overland Park, FL) lead the team in tackles with 10 on the day, while Rostell King (Kansas City, KS) registered seven tackles, four of which were tackles for loss and Jesse Mack (Olathe, KS) had an interception.

With the loss Highland falls to 1-1 on the season and now turns their attention to another league matchup as they will play host to Dodge City (1-1) on Saturday (September 7th) at 1:00pm.
