Highland Sports Weekend Recap (August 30-31st)

Fall sports season continued over the Labor Day weekend for Highland sports with the men's cross country team in action and the volleyball team, also.

 

Higland Men's Cross Country Place Three in Top 25 at Bob Timmons Classic

On Saturday (August 31st), the Highland men's cross country team headed to Lawrence, KS and competed in the Bob Timmons Classic at Rim Rock Farm and three Scottie runners placed in the top 25 finishers out of 60 competitors in the event that featured three Division I school runners from Oral Roberts, KU and UMKC along with other schools from lower divisions.

Leading the charge for Highland was Brian Martinez (Pasadena, TX) who finished 18th on the day with a time of 20:44.32. While, Seth Parres (O'Fallon, MO) and Brett Simshauser (Cuba, MO) followed Martinez finishing 20th and 25th on the day with times of 20:56.72 and 21:12.85, respectively.

Nine more Scotties competed also in the Bob Timmons Classic on Saturday at Rim Rock Farm. Chris Babell (Hiawatha, KS) took home a 36th finish as the fourth best Scottie finish of the day with a time of 22:00.33. Rey Quinones-Velez (Clermont, FL), Jonathan Oliva (Bonner Springs, KS), Carlos Gonzalez-Tabares (Jacksonville, FL) and Jonathan Null (Columbia, MO) all four placed in the 40 to 50 place range finishing 42nd, 47th, 48th and 50th. While, Tyler Caldwell (Rock Springs, WY), Carlos Pino (Bonner Springs, KS), Dakota Shelton (St. Joseph, MO) and Nic Babel (Hiawatha, KS)  also competed for the Scotties on the day finishing 52nd, 54th, 58th and 60th, respectively.

Highland Volleyball Goes 2-1 in Action at the Colby Classic Tournament

Scotties hit the court for their second tournament action of the young season and came out 2-1 in action at the Colby Classic Tournament.

Highland opened up the tournament against the host school Colby and fell in three straight sets, 25-20, 25-11, 25-22, opening the tournament with a loss. But, the Scotties turned things around to cap off the tournament with a pair of wins beating North Platte (NE) in four sets losing set one 25-19, but winning the next three sets in tight fashion 25-23, 28-26 and 25-22 to take the match.

Highland then wrapped up the tournament with a matchup against Trinidad State (CO) and the Scotties took home another hard fought win that took five sets. Scotties opened the match with a 25-20 first set win, but Trinidad responded winning the next two sets 25-19 and 29-27. Down 2-1 in overall sets the Scotties rallied for a 25-22 fourth set win and forced a fifth and final set where the Scotties came out on top 16-14 to win the match.

With the 2-1 performance at the Colby Classic the Scotties sit at 4-4 on season and turn their attention to #14 Division 2 ranked team, Kansas City Kansas CC on Wednesday (September 4th) as they head out on the road.
