Top Performerances at Regionals Punch Tickets to State in Golf for Kanzaland Area Golfers

It was a beautiful spring day on Monday and great weather for Regional golf action all across the state and many area teams highlighted the action with a few teams earn spots and at the State competition and many individuals earning spots, also.

In Class 2A and 1A the top three teams (of 4) in the regional, plus the next five best individual scores that are not members of a qualifying team, earn spots into the state tournament. Class 4A and 3A to qualify it's the same with one change only two teams qualify (teams of 6) and the next five best individual scores from the teams that qualified.

In Class 4A, four area golfers registered marks to punch their tickets to the state competition in Cheney on Monday, May 20th. For the Holton Wildcats three golfer's qualified while the Wildcat team finished third on the day just one-stroke out of qualifying for state as a team. Tavin Dugan in the top two in each tournament he competed in this year, took home a fourth place at Regionals after shooting a 77, his teammate's Kenton Tegethoff and Ethan Holaday each posted an 83 to finished tied for tenth to also qualify for state. Jeff West was the lone other 4A school to have a golfer earn a spot at State with Connor Mickens shooting an 83 to tie for tenth.

Class 3A, perhaps saw the best performance in the Regional action by area golfers as many area teams sqaured off in Horton as the Chargers played host. Big Seven League reigned supreme at the end of the day in the Regional with the Sabetha Bluejays and Nemaha Valley Raiders claiming first and second place as teams to qualify for state with team scores of 332 and 350, respectively.

Bluejays were lead by multiple top 10 finishers, including a first place finish by Nolan Keim who continued to come up big this season with solid performances. Keim shot the best round of the day at 72 to grab first by three-strokes. His teammates, Tyler Ulrich, Darrin Wenger and Kevan Herbster each finished in the top 10, too taking third, seventh and ninth, respectively. Sabetha's six man team will be rounded out by Derek Halls ans Brock Frey at the state tournament.

For the Raiders, Zach Bradley and Trent Olberding lead the way finishing fourth and fifth, respectively on the day, while Caleb Meyer joined them in the top 10 with a tenth place finish. Justice McKernan, Cody Kramer and Blake Mahney will partner with Meyer, Bradley and Olberding to compose the Raiders six-man team going to Class 3A state, which will be hosted in Seneca by the Raiders.

Horton and Maur Hill-Mount Academy were the lone other two area schools to have golfers qualify for state with four of the five best individual scores not from Sabetha and Nemaha Valley. Horton Charger, MaKennzi Knudson qualified for state by posting the second best round on the day shooting a 75 for second place. While for the Ravens Christian Wessel placed fifth overall the day to capture a top 10 finish and earn a spot at state and he will be joined by his teammates, Mark McDermed and Sean Falk who finished eleventh and twelfth, respectively.

In Class 2A the area performances were highlighted by the TVL champs the Onaga Buffaloes who placed third in the Sterling Regional behind a team score of 366. In class 2A the teams that qualify for that state are comprised of four golfers. For Onaga there top four finishes on the day came at the hands of Lucas Helget, Matt Marten, Devin Schlegal and Jace Fisher who finished tenth, fourteenth, fifteenth and eighteenth, respectively.

They will be joined by one other area golfer at the Class 2A State competition in Dodge City on Monday May 20th, as Immaculata Raider, Dawson Schroeder finished fifth in the Uniontown Regional to qualify individually for state.

Class 1A the TVL continued to send golfers to the state competition with two TVL teams qualifying with top three finishes and few other individuals qualifying, too.

Valley Heights and Linn took home top three team finishes to earn team spots at State as the Mustangs posted a team score of 386 for second and Linn finsihed third with a score of 399.

The Mustangs were lead by three top 10 finishers with Brendon Dobrovolny leading the charge taking fifth individually. Fellow Mustangs, Alec Doner and Patrick Hale took home seventh and eighth, respectively to join Dobrovolny in the top 10.

Bulldogs were lead by the third best score on the day as Zak Voelker place third for Linn, while his teammate Blaine Joonas placed ninth.

Centralia and Frankfort each will be sending golfers to Class 1A State competition in Emporia, also as Ryan Vernon from Centralia had the best individual performance of the area competitors at the Linn Class 1A Regional placing second, while fellow Panther, Brett Burdiek, also qualified for state. Fellow USD 380 golfer from Frankfort, Brett Kenworthy also earned a state tournament bid after finishing tenth on the day.

Beautiful weather lead to some great golf across the state and solid performances from Kanzaland area athletes earning them the right to play in the state competition for the Class on Monday May 20th.
