A Fourth, Fifth & Pair of Eighth Place Finishes Won at State Tennis by Area Athletes

The first of the spring sports has officially came to a close as boys tennis athletes from across the state competed in their respective state competitions over the weekend. Four singles players and three doubles teams from area schools made the state competitions in Class 4A and 3-2-1A.

Class 3-2-1A saw the best performances for the area athletes with a fourth, fifth and pair of eighth place finishes in the action. Best area performance came at the hands of Immaculata Raiders doubles team of James Cha and Phillip Hernandez who went 2-2 in action, after having a first round bye, to take home a fourth place finish. Marysville Bulldog doubles team of Joe McNish and Garrison Wright posted a 4-2 record on the taking home eighth place.

Three singles players from the area qualified for state in Class 3-2-1A and two finished in the top eight in competition. For the second straight year Maur Hill-Mount Academy Raven, Evan Wheeler took home a fifth place finish at state, this year going 5-1 in competition. The other top eight finisher from the area came by Marysville Bulldog, Tanner Wright who took home eighth place by going 3-2 in competition. Sam Rhee of Immaculata also competed in singles competition going 1-2 in his three matches.

In Class 4A, Atchison had one singles competitor and doubles team qualify for state; both Derrick Contreras and the doubles team of Wade Gassman and Spencer Walker each went 0-2 in competition to bow out of the state competition early.

After solid performances at state tennis by some area competitors, attention turns to the rest of the spring sports as the school year looks to come to a close.
