1A State Cross Country Recap: Doniphan West Girls Finish 2nd, Wetmore Boys 6th

The Doniphan West girls cross country team was looking to win their third straight 1A State Cross Country title on Saturday in Victoria. 

However, the Mustangs came up just short this time around as they finished behind Quinter for a 2nd place finish to end the 2021 season. 

Senior Elle Williams capped off an unbelievable career as she posted a time of 20:30.0 which was good for 2nd place. Garden Plains' Emma Weiner finished 24 seconds ahead of Williams to claim the individual state title.

Junior Claire Cole finished 11th with a time of 21:29.3 as she caps off a great season as well. 

The other Mustang runners included junior Alyson Gobin (53rd), senior Emma Albers (61st), freshman Cassidy Blanton (62nd), junior Lilly Clark (66th), and sophomore Lena Leatherman (67th). 

Axtell finished in 12th place as they were led by senior Aspen Buessing's 40th place finish. Other Eagle runners included freshman Audrey Kostal (54th), junior Emma Schirza (68th), junior Alison Buessing (72nd), senior Lily McClellan (73rd), sophomore Chloey Strathman (75th), and sophomore Kaylee Sandmann (80th). 

Hanover senior Michelle Zarybnicky finished with a time of 21:28.4 which was good for an 8th place finish. 

Washington County freshman McKenzie Baker finished in 10th with a time of 21:29.2 and Linn junior Claire Beikmann finished with a time of 21:45.9 which was good for 16th place. 

Also Clifton Clyde sophomore Elisa Sorell finished in 42nd.

The Wetmore boys put together a solid 2021 season and it was finished off with a 6th place team finish in Victoria. 

Senior Colby Hanzlicek led the way for the Cardinals as he posted a time of 17:52.9 which was good for an 18th place finish. Senior Eric Bloom finished strong as well in 40th place. 

Other Cardinal runners included senior Braden Henry (61st), sophomore Brayden McQueen (67th), and junior Jacob Carls (71st). 

The lone Axtell boys runner was sophomore Grady Buessing and he finished in 10th place with a time of 17:24.0. 

Also Washington County junior Drake Baker posted a time which was good for 39th place.
