If there is one thing you need to know about the Axtell Eagles, it is that it does not take long for points to be put on the scoreboard.

On Friday night the Eagles showed exactly that scoring early and often in a 48-0 blowout of Cornerstone in game that was ended at halftime.

Axtell took the opening kick and wasted no time finding the end zone as sophomore quarterback Isaac Detweiler found senior George Volle on a 12-yard touchdown pass less than three minutes into the game to give the Eagles an 8-0 lead.

Following a Cornerstone turnover on downs in Axtell territory, the Eagles quickly struck again on the first play of the ensuing drive on a 44-yard touchdown pass from Detweiler to senior Mitchell Buessing making it a 16-0 score.

The Axtell defense came right back and quickly forced a three-and-out and following a solid punt return by Volle, Dakota Barber scored his first rushing touchdown of the season on a 34-yard and the rout was on with the Eagles leading 24-0 after the first quarter.

Following another Cornerstone punt the Eagles made their only big mistake of the night as Detweiler tossed the first interception of his young career setting up the Saints in good field position.

The Saints took advantage and drove the ball down to the Axtell two-yard line, but after a high snap and a false start Cornerstone turned the ball over downs.

One play later Axtell put the nail in the coffin as Barber took a hand off up the middle, bounce it left and to raced down the sideline for a 69-yard touchdown giving the Eagles a 32-0 lead.

Axtell would tack on two more scores before halftime on a 2-yard Mitchell Buessing receiving touchdown and a 10-yard rushing score by Grady Buessing giving the Eagles a 48-0 win.

Barber was the star of the night for the Eagles and was named our “Player to Bank On” on 92.1 KMZA after rushing five times for 124 yards and two touchdowns.

Detweiler finished 6 of 9 for 84 yards and three touchdowns including two to Mitchell Buessing and one to Volle.

Axtell (2-0) held Cornerstone to just 35 total yards of offense and will now get set to host Rock Hills (1-1) next week.
