Year in and year out we are blessed in Northeast Kansas with some of the best basketball around the state in some the best leagues around the state.

The 2019-20 season was no different with big upsets, close games and buzzer beaters throughout ending with seven area teams punching their tickets to their respective state tournaments.

With the ending of high school sports for the year and nothing taking place nationally we have decided to count down our top 10 high school basketball games from the 2019-20 season.

Yesterday we rolled along our top five countdown with No. 3 and today we continue our countdown by looking at our No. 2 game of the year while the No. 1 game of the year will be released Friday.

No. 2: March 5 Frankfort Boys vs. Valley Falls 1A Sub-State Semifinals (Gerstner Game-Winner)

In by far one of the most exciting games of the year the Frankfort boys battled back from a 13-point deficit entering the fourth quarter to stun Valley Falls 54-53 on a game-winning 3-pointer by Aiden Gerstner at the buzzer.

Valley Falls dominated the first three quarters from the opening tip, jumping out to a 15-8 lead after the first quarter before pushing the lead to nine entering halftime at 27-18.

The Dragons continued to extend their lead scoring 16 points in the third quarter behind eight points from Trenton Kraxner to push the lead to 43-30 entering the fourth quarter setting up the comeback by the Wildcats.

In the fourth Frankfort just simply could not miss as Gerstner and Samuel Gros combined for three 3-pointers in the quarter while also combining to shoot 4-of-7 from the free throw line in the final frame.

The Wildcats went on to win the quarter 24-10 and behind Gerstner’s buzzer-beater moved on to the sub-state finals where they punched their ticket to the 1A State Tournament with a win over St. John/Tipton.

In the semifinal win it was Samuel Gros who led the Wildcats with 19 points while Gerstner added 15 points on three 3-pointers including the game-winner.

Valley Falls in the loss was led by Trenton Kraxner who finished with 13 points while Avery Gatzemeyer added 11.
