Blue Rapids, KS

Valley Heights and Jefferson County North met for the first time ever on the gridiron Thursday evening in the opening round of class 1A playoffs and Valley Heights dominated the Chargers en route to a 60-34 victory.

JCN took possession to start the game but fumbled on their third offensive play to give Valley Heights great field position. The mustangs wouldn’t waste it as they scored in just 5 plays on a Cole Coggins 8 yard touchdown run to lead 6-0.  The ensuing kickoff would be returned by the Charger’s Mason Noll back to the Mustang’s 3 yard line to get JCN going. 3 plays later, Logan Budy would punch it in from 1 yard out to tie the contest up 6-6.

The two teams would go back and forth trading two touchdowns each on big plays in the second quarter with Valley Heights scoring on a Jake Yungeberg 4 yard run and Cameron Beardsley 56 yard run with JCN finding the end zone through the air from Senior quarterback Boyd Tweed to Senior Landon Gutschenritter for 21 yards and a 62 yard run by Senior Logan Budy.

That’s when Valley Heights would take over scoring three more times before the halftime break with Yungeberg scoring on runs of 40 yards and 1 yard and Coggins from 7 yards to lead 40-20 at the half. Only one score in the third quarter went the way of the Mustangs on another Yungeberg run from 2 yards out. JCN and Valley heights would trade two touchdowns a piece in the fourth quarter on runs from Austin House (1yd) and Yungeberg (56yds) for the Mustangs with Budy 1 yard touchdown run and a receiving touchdown for Noll from Tweed for 24 yards.

Valley Heights led on the ground by Jake Yungeberg with 188 yards rushing and 5 touchdowns with Cameron Beardsley rushing for 187 yards and 1 touchdown. The mustangs put up 478 yards of total offense while forcing 5 JCN turnovers. The Mustangs (7-2) will now get a rematch next week as they travel to Jackson Heights (7-2) in the next round of the class 1A playoffs.

JCN was led on the ground by Logan Budy with 96 yards and 3 touchdowns as QB Boyd Tweed tossed 214 yards and two touchdowns. JCN ends their season with a 5-4 record and say farewell to a great senior class whose 4 year career ends with an overall record of 28-11.
