Just a few weeks remain in the high school volleyball regular season and the season continued Tuesday evening with area teams competing at the Doniphan West triangular on Kanzaland Radio and Valley Heights finished the night 2-0 while Wetmore picked up a win as well.
In the first match of the night Valley Heights cruised to a two-set win over Doniphan West as the Mustangs took set one 25-14 and the second 25-12.
Doniphan West couldn’t have started any better in the first set jumping out to a 3-0 lead and a 6-3 lead early, but Valley Heights came back and went on a 10-0 run to jump in front and take control at 13-6. The Mustangs pushed their lead to as much as 11 before scoring three of the final four points to take the set 25-14.
Set two was all Valley Heights from the start as the Mustangs scored the first four points and led 9-1 and 17-2 to cruise to a 25-12 set win to take the match.
In Valley Heights’ second match of the night it was once again a dominant victory as the Mustangs won in two sets over Wetmore 25-18 and 25-6.
Set one was the most competitive the Mustangs faced all night long jumping out to a 9-5 lead before Wetmore pulled back within two at 11-9. Valley Heights finally took control with a 5-0 run to get up 18-11 and going on to win 25-18.
The second set was all Mustangs from the start as Valley Heights jumped out to an 11-2 lead and led 16-6 before scoring the final 10 points to win 25-6.
In the final match of the night it was the most competitive with Wetmore overcoming an opening set loss to win in three over Doniphan West 20-25, 25-16, 28-26.
Set one was pretty much all Doniphan West was the start as the Mustangs jumped out to an 8-3 lead and led 13-5 before going on to score seven of the final eight points to take the set 25-20.
The second set was basically a flip of set one with Wetmore getting off to a 6-2 lead before extending the lead to 14-8 and scoring the final six points of the set to even the match with a 25-16 win.
In the final set of the night neither team was able to gain much of an advantage throughout as it went back and forth with Doniphan West leading 16-15 at one point. The Mustangs extended their lead to 21-17, but Wetmore at one point scored five of six points to tie the set up at 23.
Both teams had chances to win with each side having two match points before the Cardinals finally ended the set and the match 28-26.
The Cardinals got strong performances throughout led by junior Reagan Osterhaus who posted several kills while senior Lane Strathman, junior Alyssa Bloom and senior Ashley Flowers all played well.
With the win Wetmore ended the night 1-1 and pushed their record to 14-14 on the year and the Cardinals will next be in action Tuesday at Onaga.
Valley Heights with the 2-0 night is now a staggering 26-4 on the year and the Mustangs will head to Hanover next week. It was a big night for Sam Vermetten who dominated in the win over Wetmore while Emma Toerber and Maddy Vermetten were great as well.
Doniphan West is now 8-18 on the year after the tough night but were competitive all night long with strong performances from junior Sadie Leach, junior Myah Olson and senior Makinley Smith. The Mustangs will travel to Washington County on Tuesday.
