Perry Lecompton seemed very motivated and made a huge statement on Friday night jumping to a 14-0 first quarter lead and dominating almost every phase of the game.  It wasn't surprising, since the Kaws were finally getting to play at home against a Sabetha team they had lost to four times in the past two seasons, all on the road, and including twice in the playoffs to end their last two seasons.

Yet, in typical Bluejay fashion, Sabetha never blinked or panicked and then scored on five consecutive drives to take a commanding 34-14 entering the fourth quarter.  Both teams added a touchdown in the fourth frame, but the Sabetha defense recorded a pair of interceptions late for the only turnovers of the game and improved to 3-0 on the season with a 41-21 win, which was the 23rd straight victory for the program.

The Kaws drove 57 yards in seven plays to start the game before Thad Metcalfe scored on an 11-yard TD run and the Kaws very next offensive play after stopping Sabetha on downs was Metcalfe breaking free for a 70 yard touchdown.  Perry then forced a three-and-out on defense and led 14--0 heading into the second quarter.

The Bluejays then settled down and calmed the Perry momentum with a 15-play Sabetha drive that covered 80 yards and chewed up 7:57 before Gabe Garber scored on a four-yard run. The Jays converted four times on third down, including a 3rd and 17 pass play.  After forcing a punt, Sabetha then hit a big play as Garber found an open Kaleb Grimm over the middle of the field for a 51-yard touchdown pass to tie the score at 14 just 34 seconds before intermission.

The Jays defense then toughened up and allowed just one Perry first down on three drives in the third quarter. Meanwhile Sabetha scored three straight possesions on a 19-yard run by Andrew Frazee after Garber ran for 30 yards on a fourth down play. Then Garber scored on a three-yard and 37-yard scamper to cap two short drives that started inside the Perry 42-yard line after a botched punt.

Perry quarterback Billy Welch entered the game having connected on 27 of 28 passes and started this game 6-6; however after haltime he missed his first seven attempts and was just 7-21 in the second half to finish with 153 passing yards. That included a 10-yard touchdown pass to Dawson Williams to pull within 34-21 early in the fourth quarter, but after forcing a punt to get the ball back, Michael Gugelman intercepted a pass for the Sabetha defense and Braden Argabright picked off another Welch attempt on the ensuing Perry drive to keep the lead at 13.

Garber broke free up the middle with 1:24 remaining for a 60-yard touchdown run which was his fourth rushing TD of the night. He had 29 carries for 186 yards and also was 8-10 passing for another 149 and a score to earn Citizens State Bank and Trust Company Player to Bank on honors. Walker Lowdermilk was the Giant Communications lineman of the game while Frazee ran for 73 yards on 16 totes and added a 21-yard reception.  Drew Schmelzle caught three passes for 58 yards and Argabright also had three catches.

With a second straight loss, Perry fell to 1-2 on the season and played without leading receiver Parker Stone due to an ankle injured he suffered Wednesday. Metcalfe had 144 yards on 18 carries but only 28 yards after halftime. Welch ended 13 of 28 for 153 while Williams had 49 yards on four catches that all came on the same second half drive while Caidon Quinlan hauled in six receptions for 48 yards.

Both kickers were great on PAT's as Ticiano Gonzales hit all three of his tries and Linus Krauss made five of six kicks for Sabetha.

The Kaws start district play at Wellsville next week while Sabetha wil host Marysville in a battle of state ranked 3A teams.
