The impressive turnaround season under first-year Coach Garry Smith continued on Tuesday night as the fifth seeded Hiawatha boys won at Marysville 50-47 to improve to 11-10 on the season and earn a date against top seed MH-MA in a Friday semifinal.

The Redhawks led 15-5 out of the game and by as many as 13 in the first half, but trailed for the first time all night at 38-37 entering the fourth period as the lead changed hands down the stretch before a basket by Andrew Lierz with 18 second left gave Hiawatha the lead for good 48-47.  Tyler Brockoff got an offensive rebound and made one of two free throws and Sage Meyer also hit a free throw with five seconds remaining for the final margin as Marysville missed a long potential trying trey at the buzzer.

Marysville had made 162 three-pointers on the season, but struggled going just 1-16 from long distance and had a couple late costly turnovers before ending their season with a 12-8 record.  Matt Holle had 18 points while the line Bulldog senior on the team, Jacob Backus, scored 11 of his 17 in the first half.

Hiawatha was led by Brockoff with 20 points and 11 rebounds as well as going six of seven from the foul-line to earn "Player to Bank On" honors from the Citizens State Bank and Trust Company in Hiawatha.  He also played the final 5:12 of the game with four fouls.  Meyer added 11 points and Lierz and Michael Moreno each had six as Hiawatha extended their season with their second sub-state win in the last 10 years.

Hiawatha and #1 ranked MH-MA will play at 6:00 PM on Friday night in Marysville while the other 3A Sub-State semifinal pits Big 7 rivals Nemaha Central and Sabetha meeting for the third time this season at 7:30 PM.  Both games will be broadcast live on KNZA 103.9 FM and free online at www.mscsports.net
