Sabetha Wraps Up 2018 With Sweep of Hiawatha

The final week of the 2018 portion of the high school basketball season continued Tuesday night at Sabetha High School as the Bluejays picked up a sweep of Hiawatha with the Lady Jays winning 54-24 and the Bluejay boys 53-47.

The girl’s game was all Sabetha from the start as the Lady Jays jumped out to a 16-6 lead after the first quarter before going on to win 54-24.

Senior Jessica Payne got Sabetha going in the first quarter with six points while the Lady Jays were also able to capitalize on seven Hiawatha turnovers.

Sabetha pushed their lead to 18 points by halftime as they forced four more Lady Redhawk turnovers while five different players scored in the second quarter.

The Lady Jays put the game out of reach with a 16-6 third quarter behind 11 combined points between junior Maggie Hughes and sophomore Melinna Schumann.

Hughes led Sabetha in scoring with 12 points on three 3-pointers, while Payne and junior Hannah Wertenberger were also in double figures with 10 points each.

Sabetha ends the first half of the season 5-1, while with the loss Hiawatha drops to 1-5.

BOYS

The night cap was highly contested throughout with several lead changes and fireworks before Sabetha eventually took control winning in the end 53-47.

The Bluejays jumped out to a 13-8 lead after the first quarter, as senior Jesse Burger notched eight points in the quarter on 3-of-4 shooting from the free throw line.

Sabetha started the second quarter hot building their lead up to as many as nine, but Hiawatha came back and received nine combined points between juniors Michael Moreno and Tyler Brockhoff to take a 21-20 lead into the halftime break.

The Bluejays took the lead back in the third quarter by using the 3-point shot, as senior Braeden Cox drilled three 3-pointers while senior Ryan Stapleton added five points to give Sabetha a 36-27 lead after three.

Hiawatha had several chances to get back into the game in the fourth quarter, but the Bluejays got seven points from junior Gabe Garber in the fourth on 3-of-5 shooting from the charity stripe to ice the game away.

Cox led the Bluejays with a game-high 17 points on five 3-pointers, while as a team Sabetha knocked down eight shots from beyond the arc.

Hiawatha finished with three players in double figures as Moreno and junior Sage Meyer each finished with 14 points while Brockhoff added 13.

Sabetha ends the 2018 portion of the schedule a perfect 6-0 and ranked third in Class 3A, while Hiawatha drops to 4-2 heading into the holiday break.
