The first full week of the high school volleyball season wrapped up Saturday, and with that the first set of regular season rankings have been released by the Kansas Volleyball Association with four area teams named.

The biggest change in the rankings this week comes in Class 3A, as the Royal Valley Panthers have taken over the top spot while Nemaha Central came in second. The Panthers are off to a 12-0 start to the season, and have already collected two first place finishes in the two tournaments they have competed in.

Royal Valley opened up the season August 25 at the Marysville Invite going a perfect 5-0, taking down then 3A No. 1 Nemaha Central in the championship match in three sets. The Panthers then went 3-0 at the Hiawatha Triangular defeating the Thunder once again, while taking down the host Redhawks in two sets as well.

This past weekend the Panthers pushed their record to 12-0 with a perfect 5-0 mark at the Jeff West Invite, taking down the league-rival Tigers along with perennial power Silver Lake. Royal Valley dropped just one set the entire tournament and on the season have dropped just three sets total.

As to Nemaha Central they are off to a 6-2 start to the year with both losses coming to Royal Valley. The Thunder have a second place finish to their credit in the Marysville Invite, and are currently off to a 1-1 start in Big 7 League play.

The seventh spot in Class 3A belongs to another Big 7 League team in Perry Lecompton, as the Kaws are off to a 7-1 start to the year. The Kaws opened up 2018 with a split with Sabetha, but since then have not lost claiming the McLouth Invitational in the process. Perry was not ranked in the preseason rankings released last week, and have dropped just two sets all season.

The final area team checks in at No. 1 in Class 1A, as the defending state champion Centralia Panthers hold onto the top spot with a perfect 7-0 mark. Centralia already has the Wabaunsee Invite championship to their credit, and have only dropped one set all season long.
