Sabetha Baseball Rolls to 3A State Tournament First Round Win

Flying high into the a Class 3A State tournament stacked with teams with 19 or more wins the Sabetha Bluejays were looking to continue their season and that they did with a 12-4 first round win over the two seed Southeast. 

Bluejays jumped up 1-0 with a pair of hits and a sacrifice fly by Brandon Brownlee in the top of the first inning but Southeast had an answer using a pair of hits and sacrifice to tie the game up at 1-1. In the top of the second Sabetha sent seven to the plate and took regained the lead as Brett Stallbaumer led the inning off with a single and came in on a RBI groundout by Riley Hermann and then after a walk and error got two more runners on for Sabetha it was Gabe Garber delivering a two RBI triple to make it 4-1 Sabetha. In the bottom second Southeast had an answer again by sending eight to the plate and using two hits with two-outs going along with two walks and a hit batter in the inning scored three runs to knot the game at 4-4. 

The rest of the scoring in the contest came from the bats of Sabetha as Bluejay starter, Brayden Becker settled in the on the mound and gave Southeast just four base runners after the second inning. While the Sabetha offense had a pair of four-run innings coming in the fourth and fifth to push themselves to the win. A bases loaded walk by Seth Burdick and a three RBI double by Preston Bruning highlighted the fourth, while in the fifth an RBI single by Blake Frey and RBI double by Brownlee highlighted the fifth as the Bluejays went on to win 12-4 and move into the State Semifinals. 

Becker earned the win on the mound tossing six and two-thirds innings giving up four runs on six hits and four walks and struck out eight. Offensively four Bluejays had multi-hit games on the day as Stallbaumer was 3-4 with a run scored, Hermann went 2-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, Garber posted a 2-4 day with two runs scored, two RBI, triple, walk and reached on an error and Frey went 2-5 with three runs scored and a walk. 

The win improves Sabetha to 21-3 on the season and moves them into the 3A State tournament Semifinals to play Marion/Lost Springs-Centre who beat Cheney 11-1 in six innings in the first round. Bluejays will play at 11:00am on Friday in the Semifinals and are guaranteed to play another game either for third place or the State Championship. (Semifinal game will be broadcasted on 92.1 KMZA)
