Axtell Eagles Fall On Road to Riley County

The Axtell Eagles took to the court on Thursday night for their final game before the holiday break and ran into a pair of hot shooting Riley County teams as the Eagles fell in both contests. Axtell girls suffered a 59-26 loss, while the Eagle boys took a 70-40 loss on the road. 

GIRLS 

Both teams started the game sluggish on offense going nearly half the first quarter with a bucket but a three-pointer would get each time on the board and Riley County led the slim 8-5 lead at the end of the first quarter. While both teams hit a three-pointer for their first bucket on the night it was Riley County that rained in the three's all night netting 12 in the contest. In the second quarter Riley County took advantage of the three-ball and Axtell turnovers and posted a 21-7 quarter opening the frame with a 7-0 run and led 29-12 at the half. After a low scoring third quarter Riley County finished the game strong with a 23-9 fourth quarter hitting five of their 12 three's in the quarter to earn the win 59-26. 

Axtell in the loss was led by Trisha Mathewson who scored 10 points and earned Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA, while Maryna Buessing scored seven points. The loss sends Axtell to 1-5 on the season. 

The Eagles head into the holiday and are set to return to action on Friday, January 5th when they host Clifton-Clyde.

BOYS

Axtell held an early 4-3 lead but Riley County took the lead quickly and never gave it up raining in three-pointer's all night netting 13 on the evening to guide them in the win. At the end of the first quarter Axtell was down 25-14 but the Eagles hung tough in the second quarter dwindling the lead to six several times and went into halftime down just 39-31. In the second half it was all Riley County taking a firm grip on the game outscoring the Eagles 31-9 over the final two quarter's to snatch the 70-40 victory. In the win Riley County was 13-24 from three-point range. 

In the loss Axtell was led by Quinn Buessing who scored 12 points and earned Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA, while Derek Buessing added eight points. The loss sends Axtell to 2-4 on the season. 

The Eagles head into the holiday and are set to return to action on Friday, January 5th when they host Clifton-Clyde.
