Hiawatha and Riverside Split Big 7 League Tilt

It was a Big 7 battle of teams looking for their first win of the season and in a Friday night foul-fest as the Hiawatha girls and Riverside boys secured tight victories.

GIRLS = Hiawatha 40, Riverside 37

In a game that featured 58 fouls and 69 free throws, Hiawatha did just enough to hold off the visiting Cyclones for the win. The Redhawks used a 12-3 second quarter to take a 20-13 halftime lead that they did not relinquish, despite only hitting 3 of 16 foul shots in the fourth quarter.  Hiawatha was 12 of 39 at the charity stripe for the night, but all nine varsity players scored, including freshman Kate Madsen who notched five of her seven points in the fourth frame and a free throw with eight seconds left to seal the win.  Jaye Hrencher also had seven points and Reagan Riley led the Hawks (1-1) with eight.  Both teams committed 23 turnovers. Riverside (0-3) led 10-8 after one quarter and outscored Hiawatha in the third and fourth frame as well, but was 15 of 30 at the free throw line. Endiah Bryd had 11 points and Kallie Hawkins added 10 and a trio of players fouled out as the Cyclones played full court pressure defense throughout the contest.  

BOYS = Riverside 43, Hiawatha 37

Trailing 24-18 at halftime, Riverside scored the first nine points of the second half to take the lead and never look back as they outscored Hiawatha 25-10 in the final two quarters to earn the win.  The Redhawks started the game on a 9-3 run and used a 7-0 spurt in the second quarter to go ahead 20-11.  Andrew Lierz used great defense to produced 12 points in the loss while Michael Moreno had all six of his in the first quarter and Hiawatha (0-2) finished just 1-5 at the foul-line.  Riverside got four treys including three from Shane Maddox who finished with a game high 13 points.  Cornelious Anderson added 7 of his 11 in the final stanza and Andrew Miller scored 10 as the Cyclones overcame 16 turnovers and 5-16 accuracy at the charity stripe to earn the win.
