It wasn’t pretty, but the Sabetha Lady Bluejays improved to 2-1 on the season Tuesday night with a hard fought 32-29 win on the road at Perry Lecompton.

The Lady Jays got off to a fast start forcing six turnovers and taking an 11-9 lead after the first quarter, but returned the favor in the second turning over the basketball six times themselves which allowed Perry to take a 28-25 lead into intermission.

Neither team was able to gain the upper hand in the third quarter, as the two teams combined for nine total points with Sabetha holding a two-point advantage heading into the final quarter.

After Perry sophomore Jenna Keller put the Lady Kaws up two with under three minutes left on a three-pointer and a free throw, Sabetha went on a 5-0 run to end the game.

First, sophomore Morgan Schuette recorded a steal and a lay-up which tied the game up at 29, before junior Hillary Krebs picked off a pass and found fellow junior Skylar McAfee for another lay-up which gave the Lady Jays the lead for good.

Schuette capped off the win with a clutch free throw in the final seconds, as the Lady Jays forced seven turnovers in the fourth quarter to earn the come-from-behind win.

The Sabetha defense proved to be the difference Tuesday night forcing 22 total turnovers, which helped the Lady Jays overcome a tough shooting night.

Sabetha (2-1) now gets set to host ACCHS (1-1) Friday night with live coverage on the Sabetha Channel, while Perry (0-2) travels to Royal Valley (1-1).

Sabetha: Morgan Schuette – 9, Jessica Payne – 8, Skylar McAfee – 7, Hillary Krebs – 6, Maggi Hughes – 2.

Perry: Jenna Keller – 15, Blaise Ball – 6, Graci Folks – 4, Megan Fast – 4.
