A year ago, the Sabetha Lady Bluejays defended their home court and took down Marysville in the second game of the season in a thriller 39-36.

On Friday night the Lady Bulldogs returned the favor, using a 10-point fourth quarter from sophomore Sami Bartels to come from behind and take down Sabetha 40-34 in Marysville.

Sabetha started fast jumping out to a 7-2 lead midway through the first quarter, but a quick 9-0 run by Marysville to end the quarter gave the Lady Bulldogs an 11-7 advantage after one.

Marysville continued its run into the second quarter getting up by as many as eight, but a 6-0 run by the Lady Jays to end the half cut the Sabetha deficit to just two points at the break, 20-18.

The Lady Jays defense took over in the third quarter holding Marysville to just four points, which allowed Sabetha to grab a 26-24 lead heading into the fourth.

Marysville was able to figure out the Sabetha defense in the fourth putting up 14 points in the quarter while holding Sabetha to just eight, while Lady Bulldog sophomore Sam Bartels went on a personal 8-0 run to end the game.

Both teams struggled from the foul line Friday night, as Marysville finished just 13 for 21, while Sabetha shot just 7 of 15.

Marysville (2-0) now gets set for another home game Tuesday hosting Falls City, while Sabetha (1-1) travels to Perry Lecompton with live coverage on the Sabetha Channel.

BOYS

On what was an emotional night with a pregame ceremony to honor the lives of those lost in the tragedy after Saturday’s football state championship meeting, the Marysville boys used a dominating second half to take down Sabetha 59-47.

Just like Saturday’s championship football contest which Sabetha won 7-6, the basketball contest was back and forth early with neither team gaining the upper hand leaving the score tied at 22 at halftime.

After a 31 point performance in a 82-24 win over Axtell Thursday night and being shut down much of the first half, Marysville senior Gabe Pieschl finally got going in the third quarter notching seven points as the Bulldogs put up 20 in the quarter to take a 42-35 lead into the fourth.

Pieschl closed the door on a Sabetha comeback with two critical putbacks off offensive rebounds in the fourth quarter, as he finished the frame with eight points and with a game-high 22.

Marysville finished with three guys in double figures shooting 10 of 12 from the foul line, while the Bluejays had just Kyle Grimm reach double figures as he finished with 12.

Marysville (2-0) now gets set for a matchup with Falls City Tuesday at home, while Sabetha (1-1) travels to Perry Lecompton Tuesday.

Marysville: Gabe Pieschl – 22, Jack Blumer – 12, Bryson Meinhardt – 10, Jacob Backus – 6, Brennan Wetter – 4, Tyler Rader – 3, Nick Sparks – 2.
